Westboro Baptist Church vs. Cupertino

We could subtitle this the “Steve Jobs” edition, his death in October gave rise to any number of oddball tributes and events. The most disturbing? The hatefulcrazy congregation of Westboro Baptist Church staged a series of protests in an attempt to mar Jobs memorials held in Apple’s home town on Oct. 19. The Kansas-based group announced via iPhone that they would stage a hate fest. True to form, they held up their nasty banners outside the Apple campus and at Cupertino High but were met with counter protesters determined not to let them ruin the day.

The fall, and rise again of FaceTime adult services. Apple’s desire to keep their devices G-rated hasn’t stopped adult chat services from trying. But iP4Play, the first company to launch a porn chat service over FaceTime went bust this year, citing low FaceTime adoption.

That didn’t stop another come-hither chat service,UK-based Saucytime from tossing its G-string into the arena in November. Can a virtual lapdance service last longer on FaceTime than this slinky rendition of “How Mable Get Sable Cha Cha Cha?” We’ll let you know.

Apple employees team up with police to track another lost prototype, get sued. This story is harder to follow than the latest Dr. Who series but here goes: another Apple employee reportedly lost an iPhone prototype, this time in San Francisco bar Cava. Two Apple security experts allegedly searched 22-year-old Sergio Calderon’s house, along with police, hoping to find the lost phone.  The San Francisco Police Department has said two Apple employees searched Calderon’s home, car and computer while SFPD officers waited outside.

“My focus is primarily on Apple. I’m trying to figure out why Apple did this,” said Calderon’s lawyer David Monroe. The prototype hasn’t been recovered and a legal case is still pending.

Artist who hacked New York City Apple stores for a photo project under investigation by the Secret Service. 25-year-old Kyle McDonald, a digital artist who installed a program that secretly took photographs of people using the Macs at two New York City Apple Stores, had his own computers confiscated by the United States Secret Service. He may face criminal charges for installing a program that snapped pics on the sly at the West 14th Street and SoHo Apple Stores.

McDonald said his project was a statement on the way people become obliviated by machines.

“We have this expression on our face [when we use computers] that basically says that we’re not interacting with anybody, we’re interacting with the machine,” he said. “Even if there are a lot of people in the room at the Apple store, you’re not interacting with them. If something weird happens, you don’t say, ‘Hey, did you see that?’”

The iPad 2 vs. Lava.  In a more extreme take on the microwaving, torching and shooting of Apple devices we’ve seen previously, this time from accessory maker ZooGue pits Apple’s iPad against hot lava. While the outcome is pretty darn predictable, watching that river of molten lava engulfing a man-made device has a decidedly primal appeal. What’s next – iPads cannonballed to their fiery demise in space?

Apple sidelines controversial DUI checkpoint apps from iTunes, kinda. Bowing to pressure from lawmakers after a U.S. senate hearing, Apple updated the review guidelines to sideline new apps that might be seen as aiding drunk drivers avoid getting caught by police. Some of the grandfathered apps are still available, as are a bunch of drinking games. Salut!

The iPad pinky ripper gets 25 years. 2011 brought an end (we sincerely hope) to the story of Brandon Smith, who ripped off part of Bill Jordan’s finger in a parking lot iPad robbery.  Smith, 22, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The Denver Post reported that Brandon Smith apologized to the victim, Bill Jordan, who did not appear in court for the sentencing hearing “because he fears for his life.” The scales looked weighted after Smith reportedly thought his theft case would go away if the victim was ‘eliminated.’

Nicole, you remind me of Brer Rabbit screaming about how he didn’t want to be thrown into the briar patch.  Every time you post something like this, as you did at the time, you encourage these idiots to this kind of thing elsewhere.  You’re giving them exactly the air they want.  Did we really have to be reminded again?  If your imagination so dessicated that you can’t come up with anything else to post?

Westboro Baptist Church spreads its hate through picketing in
our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive language and flag desecration,
attempting to create a confrontation. This is not a church, this is a hate
group.  This is not about protesting,
freedom, or God. They are in it for the money and the press; this is a family
law firm. They are not a “church.” It is a scam. They go after
anything that can get them in the news. This is a family of lawyers using this
“god hates you” thing to make money. It is time for this scam and the hate to
    end.

    The
church has received money from lawsuits and legal fees. For example, they sued
the city of Topeka several times in the 1990s. WBC received $16,500, and is
pursuing another $100,000, in legal fees for a case won in court. The WBC is
considered a nonprofit organization by the federal government, and is therefore
    exempt from paying taxes!

    Phelps-Roper
of the Westboro Baptist Church is shown
admitting on camera that her oldest son was born out of wedlock. Hypocritical
Phelps-Roper’s vocal condemnation on strangers having sexual congress outside
of marriage while she herself was guilty of the same. They are NOT what they
    say they are!!

Thanks for your post, 8811081.  Seeing the WBC in the news, blog posts, anywhere disgusts me.  It disgusts me because they lead some to believe they serve God. What God do they serve?  I became a believer in Christ after developing an understanding of God’s grace and unchangeable love for me.  I didn’t earn His love by my sexuality…nor shall anyone else. God doesn’t hate fags, nor anyone reading this posts.  I have to imagine He hates people stamping His name on their hate crimes!Hateful people have waved Christian banners as an excuse for their own hatred…for their own agendas…for their uncomfortableness with those different than themselves for thousands of years. These people are not Christians… They are haters.  Christ’s repeated message was that people would know His followers by their love.  If you do not see the mark of love (granted all people do make mistakes), then they are not following Jesus.I could claim to follow anyone or anything I chose… I could wave a banner hailing association with [ insert cause or faith ], yet have not TRUE affiliation or understanding.Actions speak louder than words.  And unfortunately WBC’s actions get more press coverage than followers of Jesus who believe and live by Christ’s words… believers who live for opportunities to pour out love, opportunities to serve strangers, to help the hopeless, to feed the hungry, meet the needs of their fellow human.  We all know some bad examples.  A few of us know some good examples.  I am thankful to know lots of the good examples.  Yeah, they mess up and they aren’t perfect… they’re human. But people in our lives see something different. I rarely tell anyone I’m a Christian because I want people to see and not simply hear about Christ.Plus, I don’t want to be associated with the WBCs out there or anyone like them.Though I rarely tell people I am a Christian, people do ask why I make the decisions I do.  Why do I live for others more than simply for myself? Why spend money to help strangers?  Why use my time taking homeless-alcoholics for a good dinner? Why seek out, then begin the journey of healing with sexual abuse and torture victims? Why leave a comfy, American home to reside in third-world or war-torn arenas to serve the women and children whose spirits have been broken and have lost everything to war, destruction, poverty, terror? Why???Because Jesus changed my life.  Because I met Jesus and experienced an unquenchable love.Because Jesus calls His followers to love like He loved.  And He (if we are buying into this biblical schema)loved to the point of death.Yes… their are plenty of “lovers” out their loving not because they know Jesus.Well… I’m not that nice.  I would be using my skills, talents and resources to “get mine” if the love of Jesus hadn’t changed me.I can only speak for me and for my faith.  This is my journey.Maybe a million will read about WBC and their hatred. Maybe at least one person out there will read about this man and his love.About one guy who loves because of something he learned from another man…the man and God named Jesus.”By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”A quote from Jesus – John 13:35
