Can you spot the difference? Photo: Benjamin Geskin
It turns out the more affordable 6.1-inch iPhone that Apple has planned for 2018 won’t quite be the iPhone X lookalike we were expecting.
The brand new handset will certainly borrow a lot of the iPhone X’s design traits, but according to new screen protectors, its LCD display won’t be truly edge-to-edge.
Apple's redesign of the App Store with iOS 11 probably helped increase software downloads and revenue. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
In the battle of the mobile software stores, Apple has a huge lead. Consumers spending in the iOS App Store during the first half of this year was almost double that of rival Google Play.
But there’s good news for both companies, as each experienced solid year-over-year growth.

The fourth beta of macOS Mojave is already here after Apple seeded a new update of the upcoming Mac update to developers this morning.
macOS Mojave is the first of Apple’s big 2018 software updates to get a fourth beta build. The company came out with iOS 12 beta 3 and macOS Mojave beta 3 less than two weeks ago, but some fresh fixes for the Mojave build is already here.
This is one of several iPad Pro wallpapers available for free. No strings attached. Photo: Apple
Anyone in an Apple Store recently may have seen the really spectacular images pre-loaded on iPad Pro models. But now you don’t have to leave your chair to see them because they’re all available to download.
There is a caveat: they aren’t being distributed by Apple, just someone who copied them off a tablet and shared them.
Apple’s new MacBook Pro offers buyers significantly improved performance at the same price as last year’s models, as well as a “quieter,” improved butterfly keyboard and a True Tone display. But is it worth the upgrade?
Early reviews of the 2018 update are out now. Here’s what they say about Apple’s fastest and most impressive laptop yet.
It's easy to hide your photos in iOS -- and just as easy to find them. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Did you know that you can hide photos in your iPhone’s Photos library? This lets you keep photographs away from prying eyes, while still having access to them yourself. And — ironically — it also makes it very easy to find all the embarrassing/explicit photos on somebody else’s iPhone.
ParkWhiz makes finding parking as easy as searching our destination. Photo: Ian Fuchs/Cult of Mac
If you live near a big city, or travel to metro areas frequently, you know what a pain in the butt parking can be. Parking lots and garages use confusing signage to trick you into spending more money, and some less expensive spots are often poorly labeled or hidden entirely. With ParkWhiz, you can get the most bang for your buck, and know exactly what you’re getting. Best of all, you’ll save time so you can enjoy your trip without adding stress.
Unfortunately for existing MacBook and MacBook Pro owners, Apple won’t fit its newer keyboard into older machines — not even if yours is in need of repair.
2018 MacBook Pro performance offers the biggest year-over-year improvements since the release of the 2011 models. Photo: Apple
The 15- and 13-inch MacBook Pro models launching this week boast significantly faster processors. Tests with the Geekbench benchmarking tool show speed increases as high as 86 percent.
The improvements come from faster Turbo Burst frequencies and more processor cores.

Apple made potential buyers of the new MacBook Pro models very nervous when it said no effort had been made to fix the problems plaguing the keyboards in earlier versions. Happily, it turns out the company was fibbing.
Taking apart this just-released Mac laptop shows that Apple definitely modified its butterfly keyboard mechanism to make it less likely to jam.
With so many people working on the Apple self-driving car, it's amazing that the best visuals we have are artists' concept renderings like this one. Image: Aristomenis Tsirbas/Freelancer
Apple stays quiet about it, but the company is clearly developing a self-driving car. And this week the world was given a glimpse inside this project, showing that it’s much larger than many had previously thought.
The FBI arrested a former employee on Apple’s autonomous car design team for allegedly downloading proprietary information and attempting take it to a rival car company in China. The resulting documentation reveals the number of employees on the project.

Apple R&D spending would have to double to match some of its competitors. Photo: Jim Merithew/Cult of Mac
Apple spent a whopping $12.7 billion on research and development last year. And $51 billion since Tim Cook became CEO. But one analyst says that might not be enough.
The company actually spends less on R&D as a percentage of the money it takes in than many of its competitors. About half as much.
Lambda School's coding academy sounds almost too good to be true. Photo: Cult of Mac
A Silicon Valley is offering wannabe coders the opportunity to get a free MacBook and free housing while taking their 30-week iOS coding course.
Of course, there’s a bit of a catch with the offer. Lambda School CEO Austen Allred revealed his school’s amazing offer along with the stipulation that if you do find a job and start earning over $50k a year, you have to pay the school back.
This week brought the first True Tone MacBook Pro. And that also goes for some external screens, like this Apple Thunderbolt Display. Photo: Apple
The 2018 MacBook Pro models just released are the first with True Tone, adjusting the display to match ambient lighting. Even better, these new laptops can do the same trick on some external screens.
True Tone can “automatically adapt [the] display to make colors appear consistent in different ambient lighting conditions,” according to Apple.
