And it looks the part on a desk. Its cheese-grater-textured aluminum back echoes the design language of the Mac Pro it was designed to serve. In several years of our Setups coverage, the XDR has appeared rarely enough that each sighting feels like an event. Some owners have one. Some have two. A fearless few have three. All of them know exactly what they paid. The following 12 setups represent the archive’s finest XDR appearances.

If you can’t stretch to $5,000 for a Pro Display XDR, there is a workaround — sort of. A Mac Studio owner discovered that a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, connected to the Mac Studio on a stand at desktop height, functions as what commenters immediately called a “mini Pro Display XDR.” The 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses the same Liquid Retina XDR display technology as the full-size monitor — 2,732 x 2,048 pixels, ProMotion 120Hz, 1,000 nits full-screen brightness, 1,600 nits peak HDR — at a 12.9-inch size. “Woah — it’s the Apple cash register!” quipped a commenter on the side-by-side Mac Studio and iPad Pro. “A darn expensive one too,” Tom agreed. The setup’s NuPhy Studio Air60 mechanical keyboard completes a compact workstation that is approximately one-third the size and one-third the price of the real thing.

The year is 2020. A tech YouTuber Danny Winget assembles what was then arguably the most aspirational Mac setup on the internet: a Mac Pro — Apple’s most powerful desktop — paired with a Pro Display XDR on the $999 Pro Stand. The desk holds almost nothing else. “When tech YouTuber Danny Winget mapped out his dream setup, he was looking to achieve one thing: stark minimalism,” the article noted. The XDR is in standard glass; he bought the nano-texture version first but returned it after finding matte softened the image too much. The Pro Stand gets a diplomatic verdict: “nice,” but “completely unnecessary.” As an early XDR-in-the-wild document from when the monitor was still new and the Mac Pro was Apple’s current tower, this remains a historically notable setup entry.

The backstory here is the whole point. The setup belongs to the user’s wife — a Linux-loving software programmer who was once “strongly anti-Apple,” per her husband. Her conversion began with an M1 MacBook for its unprecedented battery life and cool operation. One thing led to another, and by the time this article appeared, the programmer was using a Mac Studio paired with a Pro Display XDR on an Ergotron monitor arm — the arm because she likes to bring the XDR close to her face. A Meta Quest VR headset is in the mix for “VR development on the side for personal projects.” The conversion arc from confirmed Apple-hater to Pro Display XDR owner is among the more dramatic in the Setups archive, and the setup itself is beautifully clean.

The user bought his Pro Display XDR for substantially less than the $5,000 retail price — details undisclosed, but implied to be a genuinely good deal. The display drives an M1 Pro MacBook Pro setup that is otherwise notable for its audio gear: Yamaha HS7 near-field studio monitors, the same speakers used in professional recording facilities, positioned on either side of the XDR. This coder had a specific goal: to be able to code, watch YouTube and check logs simultaneously, each on its own screen. The solution involved a loaded 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Pro (approximately $4,000) plus three external displays, the finest of which is a Pro Display XDR added last. Joining the XDR are a 28-inch LG DualUp (nearly square) and a 34-inch Acer curved ultra-wide. A three-display configuration is itself unusual, especially with an XDR as the natural focal point. A rarely seen ZSA Voyager split keyboard handles ergonomic input duties. “My setup achieved its final form with the Pro Display XDR,” said the post’s title. The user flagged one lingering anxiety: that Apple might announce a successor and make them want to upgrade.

The article’s practical focus is the mount question: which stand holds a $5,000 display without wobble? The MonitorsInMotion arm is “solid as an absolute rock,” the user said. The AmazonBasics arm wobbles. The Ergotron wobbles only slightly. “Any social media poster flaunting more than one Pro Display XDR stands accused of possessing great wealth by commenters,” the article noted.

Hudson uses the three screens “for maximum access to tabular data,” which is the kind of sentence that makes sense only if you trade for a living.
