Austin cancels SXSW over coronavirus fears

The organizers of South by Southwest, desperately hoping to hold the March event in the face of a coronavirus outbreak, said Friday that the city of Austin, Texas, canceled the conference.

Event planners scrapped the music, tech and film conference, set to begin March 13, after local health officials declared a health emergency.

Apple has sent out a work-from-home recommendation to all of its Cupertino-based employees due to fears of the growing coronavirus outbreak in the United States.

It is unclear if the notice to employees at Apple Park and Infinite Loop was a suggestion and not a requirement and for how long the company is recommending its workers refrain from reporting to their offices.

Apple on Friday cancelled its “Today at Apple” sessions across all stores in Italy amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

Apple Oriocenter, a store in Italy’s Bergamo Province, is also closed temporarily as Apple makes efforts to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. It is currently out of action until March 8.

The company is seeking editors for the Maps team in Culver City, California, who will help build a “brand-new content category.” It wants people who have an “insatiable curiosity for discovering new places.”

The COVID-19 virus killed another major tech event Tuesday, when Google canceled the physical aspect of its annual developers’ conference, Google I/O 2020.

The company sent emails to attendees this afternoon notifying them that the event, scheduled to take place from May 12 to 14, has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns. The news came shortly after Adobe canceled its annual developers’ conference.

Banned email app BlueMail is back in the Mac App Store, just one week after its developers tried to publicly rally other small companies to speak out against Apple’s App Store practices.

The U.S. Justice Department is reaching out to parental app control companies that may have been affected by Apple’s allegedly anti-competitive App Store practices.

Reuters reported this morning that Suren Ramasubbu, the chief executive developer of Mobicip, was interviewed by US investigators. Mobicip, which allows parents to control what kids access on their iPhones, was kicked out of the App Store last year because it failed to meet new app requirements.
