It’s Labor Day in the U.S.A. which means you’re probably all hanging out by the pool, barbecuing, drinking, and doing stupid stuff as a way to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers in the past. It doesn’t really make sense, but who cares.

When you get back to work tomorrow though, break time is over. To help you get back into the swing off things, we’ve rounded up the 10 best productivity apps for iOS.

Today marks the first anniversary of Tim Cook as CEO of the world’s biggest company, but what has really changed under the soft-spoken, shy-seeming Alabaman?

Virtually everything. Tim Cook has given Apple what Steve Jobs never could: a conscience.

We talk about the iPad’s role in healthcare pretty regularly. Many physicians and health care practices have found innovative ways to integrate the iPad into daily patient interactions. According to a new study, the pharmaceutical industry has discovered that the iPad is an excellent tool for promoting new medications and that it can influence the prescribing habits of doctors.

Apple’s next iPhone is widely expected to feature a larger 4-inch display and slimmer form factor. While speculation has been that Apple will move to a larger display to accommodate the battery required for LTE 4G networking, exactly how Apple will implement a larger display has remained up in the air. Many seem to think that Apple will change the iPhone 5’s aspect ratio to 16:9 to match the taller display. According to new evidence found in Apple’s own iOS Simulator developer app, the iOS home screen can be scaled to fit a taller 640×1136 display with 5 rows of icons.

Me, I like a tidy Desktop. Sure I save things to the Desktop (like the images I use for these posts), but once a week or so I clean house, deleting almost everything from my Desktop. Now my buddies AJ and Shane, well they have Desktops that make my eyes bleed. Files and folders everywhere. I’m seriously thinking I should buy them each a copy of DesktopShelves. It’s not going to be a big deal either because, it’s our first $5 Friday!

DesktopShelves does one simple thing. You create “shelves” (they look like shelves you have on your wall) to hold files and folders on your Desktop. It’s a virtual thing, really, everything is still in a folder in the Finder, but it looks better. Check out the movie after the jump.

In the weeks leading up to Apple’s rumored September 12th media event we’ve seen real-looking and not-so-real-looking leaks of the next iPhone. Rumors say that the sixth-gen iPhone (commonly referred to as the “iPhone 5” for clarity’s sake) will be taller and thinner than its predecessor. The device is expected to boast a 4-inch display, 4G LTE, and a redesigned form factor.

A new video has surfaced alongside a series of images comparing the current iPhone 4S front panel with the iPhone 5’s larger front panel.

If there’s a sucker born every minute, that person is probably hoping to find a crazy-cheap deal on an iPad or iPhone in the newspaper.

The San Francisco Examiner published an article about Apple’s flap with local government over their withdrawal from the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment (EPEAT) rating system with a half-page ad selling discount iPads right below it. An ad that was way, way too good to be true.

There’s no way to be nice about it: Microsoft is not cool. Their products aren’t cool (sans Xbox!). Their logo isn’t cool. And then there’s their dancing, prancing, screaming, bear of a man slash CEO: Steve Ballmer. Steve Jobs’s widow, Laurene Powell, who is said to be the richest woman in Silicon Valley, has reportedly purchased a $4 million home in Sun Valley, Idaho, where Apple CEO Tim Cook is attending the Allen & Company media conference this week. The new property is said to be located near a river’s edge in the wetlands area, and boasts three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms.

Microsoft has had a lot to say about Apple over the past couple days. The Redmond-based company is holding its annual Worldwide Partner Conference this week, and some recent comments from Microsoft COO Kevin Turner and CEO Steve Ballmer address the company’s stance on Apple as a competitor.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and the late Steve Jobs have spoken out multiple times on how the iPad and iPhone have pioneered the “post-PC era.” Instead of needing a traditional desktop computer, consumers are turning to tablets and smartphones for their everyday habits. Today, Microsoft’s Turner called Apple out on its post-PC label, saying “We actually believe Windows 8 is the new era for the PC plus.” Yesterday, Steve Ballmer said, “we are not going to leave any space uncovered to Apple.”
