Apple's privacy stance is good. But is there a Photo: Apple
Most people seem to agree that Apple’s stance on user privacy is a good one. However, U.S. lawmakers suggest it could be a cover for something else: anti-competitive behavior.
According to a new report, some legislators think Apple might be using privacy as a “shield” to get away with behavior that lets it strengthen its own position, while hurting rivals.

Steve Jobs signatures are rare, and this one is on a nice piece of Apple memorabilia. Photo: RR Auctions
Rare Apple computers made in the 1970s sell for amazing sums, but a bit of company memorabilia is up for auction at a price an average Mac fan might be able to afford. Which isn’t to say that a 3.5-inch disk signed by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is expected to go for cheap.

Touch sensitive and toasty. Photo: David Pierini/Cult of Mac
For the longest time, winter gloves had one job: Keep our hands warm. When smartphones came along, things got complicated for gloves.
Consumers demanded a fabric conductive enough for our gloved hands to work our touchscreens. Simple enough — except, of course, on really cold days, when fingers inside those typically thin touchscreen gloves felt like icicles.
This online security post is presented by Dashlane.
Ocean’s 11-style capers, whether in movies or in the real world, are a lot more colorful than the typical online heist. But they are usually a lot less lucrative than real-life cybercrimes. The top online thefts in recent history netted copious amounts of cash or financial data. And despite increasing sophistication, hackers sitting at their keyboards often have a considerably easier time of it than George Clooney’s all-star cast of super-grifters did in the movie.
If the top five online heists described below don’t make you feel the acute need to review your own personal online financial security, they should.

Charging -- not just about cables any more. Photo: Cult of Mac
Charging an iPhone used to be so simple. You’d grab your 30-pin dock connector cable, the one that was almost as big as an AirPods charging case, and you’d jam it into the huge slot on the bottom of your iPhone. Then you’d wait.
Today, the kids don’t know how easy they have it. They can plug in a svelte, skinny Lightning cable to charge their iPhones, but they can also opt for several other ultra-modern (and probably fashionable) charging methods. Hell, even the olde worlde cable method has some high-tech, high-speed alternatives.
Let’s get right into it. Here are six different ways you can charge your iPhone.

By now, we’ve learned that two of the three rear-facing cameras on the iPhone 11 Pro are worthy of the Pro name. The third, the ultra-wide, is merely adequate.
Mobile phone lens-maker Moment has a new chunk of glass to bring fisheye drama to your photos with the image quality you expect from a camera with Pro in the name.
Apple's got some fascinating ideas for Apple Car. Photo: Aristomenis Tsirbas/Freelancer
Currently, drivers only have the rearview and side mirrors of a car to let them know what’s going on behind them. But a new Apple invention describes an upgrade — that may eliminate blind spots by projecting mirrored images of the surrounding environment onto the window or windshield.
This could give the driver more contextual information about their surroundings, depending on where they are.

U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup found that the evidence presented by plaintiffs was inadequate. They are now blocked from bringing amended claims against Apple in the future.
People sure want to work for Apple. But not as much as they want to kill rats, apparently. Photo: Jim Merithew/Cult of Mac
Those dirty rats! A pest control company knocked Apple out of first place on a list of best U.K. employers.
Global pest control company Rentokil Initial rose to No. 1 on the list, compiled using employee reviews on jobseeker site Indeed. Apple fell to second place — but it’s still the only non-U.K. company to make the top five.

By now, you know that you can use multiple windows from the same app in iPadOS 13, just like you can on the Mac. And you probably also know that it’s a pain to open a new window from scratch. But did you know that there’s an easier way to open a new window in iPadOS? You can just drag an item to the edge of the screen, and drop it there to open it in a brand-new Split View window. Let’s check it out.
