Kimberly and Rebecca Yeung ready their space craft for flight into near space. Photo: Winston Yeung/YouTube
Ask sisters Kimberly and Rebecca Yeung about their Labor Day weekend and they could legitimately say, It was out of this world.
With a craft they constructed using light-weight wood and arrow shafts, Kimberly, 8, and Rebecca, 10, launched a weather balloon that reached a height of 78,000 feet. How do they know? Other than the two GoPro cameras aboard that recorded the flight, the girls outfitted their craft with a flight computer to record data, such as temperature and distance traveled.

Dave Keene had colon cancer and wouldn’t be sure until after surgery whether it would kill him. What he did know for sure was if it did, his young son would eventually forget the sound of his voice.
Keene, a veteran engineer in the gaming industry, used his time before surgery to develop an iOS app that would change that. He created everyStory, a kind of digital photo album that includes audio attached to each photo.
Samsung has been taking a beating from Apple as of late, and apparently it’s taking its toll.
According to a new report, Samsung is responding to its diminishing smartphone sales not by fixing the root problem of its lack of originality and low quality reputation, but rather by sacking 10 percent of its workforce instead.
Blick Bassy became an international star thanks to Apple. Photo: Blick Bassy
40-year-old Cameroonian musician Blick Bassy has revealed how his life was transformed when Apple chose one of his songs, “Kiki,” for part of its iPhone 6 ad campaign.
Although the ad only includes a 15-second excerpt of the song, Bassy says the resulting exposure has been greater than anything he has experienced in his 20 year musical career.
Buy one, get one free on the Apple iPhone 6s/6s Plus for AT&T. Photo: Apple
Take this with a huge grain of salt, but a blurry image coming out of Asia purporting to be from Apple’s own iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus spec sheets suggests that Apple may bump the resolution of the next two handsets. But honestly, it’s pretty unlikely. Here’s why.
The Apple Watch sure is a versatile device. Photo: Apple
Unlike many previous must-have tech gadgets, the Apple Watch doesn’t just have one killer app — but many. So what exactly do owners use their Watch for then, and how does this stack up against Apple’s stated goals for the device?
A new survey released by analysts at Wristly charts the usage of around 2,000 Apple Watch owners, and reveals a few intriguing insights into the most and least popular uses for Apple’s debut wearable device.
The conclusions? Checking the time and monitoring activity = Hot. Using it as a next-gen communication device = Not.
Looking for a startup idea? I'll license the concept of Gorilla Tinder for a very reasonable price. Photo: Paul Ross
An iPhone owner found that the bond shared by Apple fans even extends between species when he met an iPhone-loving gorilla during a recent trip to Louisville Zoo in Kentucky.
Separated by safety glass from one of our closest living relatives, the visitor decided to show Jelaini the gorilla photos of other gorillas — leading to an astonishing video in which Jelaini appears completely transfixed by the images.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus could have a new baby bro. Photo: Martin Hajek
One of the more intriguing iPhone rumors this year has been the return of a 4-inch Apple handset in the form of the so-called iPhone 6c.
But what would it look like alongside the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s and 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus? To help us out, noted concept designer Martin Hajek has given us a special sneak preview.
The next Kindle Fire tablet could cost less than an iPad case. Is $50 the sweet spot for Kindle Fire MSRP?
If you can’t beat ’em, underprice ’em. That’s been Amazon’s motto with pretty much all its hardware, especially its Android-based Fire tablets and phones.
But what do you do when even pricing your entry-level Android tablet at under $100 each doesn’t move units? Drop the price to less than $50, apparently.
Beware dodgy porn apps for Android. Photo: Cult of Android
An Android app that promises free porn has been secretly snapping photos of its users as they enjoy its content. “Adult Player” then locks up the victim’s device and uses their photo in a ransom note demanding $500.
Lenovo today unveiled its new Phab Plus smartphone, a supersized device with a 6.8-inch display that’s a blatant iPhone 6 knockoff. The device is coming to the U.S. later this month, assuming Apple’s lawyers can’t get it banned before then.

Martin Hajek's latest concept gives the Apple TV an iPhone 6-like design. Photo: Martin Hajek
Earlier today, we saw a gorgeous concept for what the new Apple TV’s iOS 9-driven interface could look like, courtesy of Andrew Ambrosino.
Now, Martin Hajek – the designer behind the most drool-worthy Apple concepts around – has teamed up with Ambrosino to give us a look at what he imagines the Apple TV hardware itself will look like.
No surprises here: it’s gorgeous. And while it’s probably not what the new Apple TV will actually look like, I’d love to buy this if Apple released it as an Apple TV Pro.
Next year's WWDC, anyone? Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures
Apple is ramping up its hiring of artificial intelligence experts in an attempt to compete with companies like Google.
According to a new report, Apple’s number of machine learning gurus has tripled or quadrupled in the past few years, and Cupertino is currently in the middle of a hiring spree for even more.
We know that the next Apple TV will be a radical, gaming focused overhaul of Apple’s streaming set-top box, but what will it actually look like? Wednesday will tell, but if it looks and feels anything like this iOS 9 overhauled concept by Andrew Ambrosino, we’ll be pretty happy indeed.

Everyone’s focused on Apple’s upcoming “spaceship” campus, but Apple is also currently hard at work on its second-largest global campus.
Based in Northwest Austin, TX, the 1.1 million square foot space will reportedly house around 7,000 local workers, and be responsible for Apple’s “business operations for the Western Hemisphere.”

The new Steve Jobs movie is getting rave reviews from film critics, but what about from the people who were actually there in the trenches with the real Steve Jobs?
According to Jobs’ Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, the film is pretty darned accurate. In fact, Woz says that there were times watching the movie when he just about forgot he was watching actors on-screen rather than the real people involved.

Apple expects the iPhone 6s to shatter some records. Photo: Jim Merithew/Cult of Mac
China’s smartphone market might be slowing down, but Apple’s not letting that stop it from ordering a record number of iPhone 6s units ahead of this week’s keynote unveiling.
According to sources in the iPhone supply chain, Apple has ordered higher than expected numbers of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus units.
Based on the quantities of components orders, these numbers will outstrip even last year’s record-breaking iPhone 6 and 6 Plus — suggesting that Apple expects to sell more of its next-gen iPhone than any previous iPhone in history.
Reviewers are already throwing around Oscar talk. Photo: Universal Pictures
After a rocky pre-production period which saw it switch directors, lose actor after actor, and even be ditched by its original studio, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs biopic finally made its debut at Colorado’s Telluride Film Festival this weekend — and, boy, does it sound like it was worth the wait!
Reviews so far are all good-to-excellent, but the real surprise is the unanimous support for Michael Fassbender as Jobs. We’d noted before how little Fassbender physically resembles Steve although, as has been proven time and again, that doesn’t stop good actors from inhabiting a role — which is exactly what it sounds like Fassbender has done.
