Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says the iPhone X is the first iPhone he doesn’t plan to buy on “day one.”
The reason? Satisfaction with his iPhone 8, despite its lack of major changes, and skepticism about whether one of the big features of the iPhone X will work as promised.
The feature Wozniak is concerned about is the Face ID facial recognition system, which he is skeptical will work as well as promised.
“I’d rather wait and watch that one,” Wozniak said during an interview at the Money 20/20 conference. “I’m happy with my iPhone 8 — which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6, to me. For some reason, the iPhone X is going to be the first iPhone I didn’t — on day one — upgrade to. But my wife will, so I’ll be close enough to see it.”
Although Face ID was the cause of a notable botch at the Apple keynote where it was unveiled, this was due to Apple’s own security system rather than a fault with the handset itself.
This isn’t the first time Woz has expressed views counter to what Apple would no doubt prefer. Previously, he suggested that Apple should consider building an Android device. He also referred to the Apple Watch as a “luxury fitness band.”
Woz often walked back comments like these later. Most recently, he likened Steve Jobs’ personality to that of Donald Trump — not in an altogether favorable way.

Agree with Woz 100%. I’m very happy with the 8+. There will undoubtedly be lots of complaints when the X doesn’t deliver, but that’s to be expected with the brand new Face ID system. This time next year when the X+ comes out and the bugs are worked out, I’ll upgrade again then.
I guess he’s been careful not ruin himself.
Well when he’s right, he’s right.
I bought an iPhone 8+. I wanted to love the X, but there were two many unknowns…With the 8+, I get all of the processing power, same camera and a finger print scanner.
same camera? no.
That clickbait headline makes it sound like he’s being critical of the X, whereas the text is saying he’s very happy with the 8 WHICH HE JUST BOUGHT THIS MONTH!
that and his wife is getting the X, so he will have one to play with.
