An old saying states that those who can, do; those who can’t, teach — and to this we should maybe add that those teachers who can’t afford the latest Apple products on their salary, steal.
That’s according to a new report stating that a former Caldwell School District teacher in Idaho has pleaded guilty to grand theft charges, after buying (and then failing to hand over) a plethora of Apple gadgets — including two iPod touches, three iPad 2s, a 27-inch iMac, and three iPad minis.
That’s an A for effort, but a D- for execution.
35-year-old Elysa Skousen had a criminal complaint first filed against her in August 2013, when Caldwell Superintendent Tim Rosandick highlighted the fact that she had bought said items with school district money, but then stopped working in the job, and failed to return any of the devices.
The combined haul added up to a not-insignificant $4,746.
As punishment, Skousen has been ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, 5 days of inmate labor detail, 2 years of unsupervised probation, and also hand in her Idaho teaching certificate for a period of two years.
On top of this, she must pay $6,880 to Caldwell School District — which is at least enough of an increase on the original $4,746 sum that the school should be able to buy a few Apple Watches if it feels the need.

Please don’t start your article with a phrase that belittles all educators. Many old sayings are untrue, bigoted, or prejudicial; just because they exist doesn’t mean you should use them. By all means tear into a teacher that commits criminal activities, but I feel you could have used a different introduction to your article. My own opinion as a teacher, and honestly there is much worse stuff on the internet, so not a huge deal. I’m aware I’m being nit picky, thanks for reading.
Well where I come from, high school graduates who don’t have high enough scores to study a university course, choose teaching as the entrance score levels are so low, it’s a preferred option for the dumb. So these inadequate people end up teaching our children. In a recent study, many teachers couldn’t pass basic literacy and numeracy tests themselves. So in this case, that platitude fits.
She was fired? No teacher union is going to try to protect her. That’s not the point of unions.
But this has nothing to do with teaching, that’s what the unions are for. If someone breaks the law, the union isn’t going to try to protect them.
