Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs movie finally gets a wide release this weekend — meaning that fans outside of the New York and Los Angeles areas will get a chance to watch the controversial biopic.
So will they?
According to box office projections, the $30 movie is expected to earn between $15 and $19 million for its first weekend, with the main rival for the no. 1 box office spot being Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.
In total, Steve Jobs will be available to view at 2,411 theaters around the U.S. In its limited release, the movie raked in $130,250 per screen, which gives it the 15th highest per-theatre figure in history.
Given the press the movie has received, it will be interesting to see how it does. For those who have been following, two separate stories have been circulating.
In the one camp are those who who claim it is a great movie and an accurate (in spirit, if not necessarily facts) portrayal of Jobs. These include Andy Hertzfeld, Steve Wozniak and John Sculley. On the other hand are the naysayers, including Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs, Jony Ive, Tim Cook and — most recently — Walt Mossberg.
