A new leak says the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s rumored variable-aperture camera won’t make it to the smaller iPhone 18 Pro.
The claim comes from a Weibo leaker with a strong track record on Apple hardware. The leaker also suggests Apple might limit a rumored upgrade to the Pro Max’s telephoto lens to the bigger phone, further widening the gap between this year’s Pro models.
iPhone 18 Pro Max camera might bring exclusive upgrades
Over the years, Apple has turned iPhone camera upgrades into one of the most powerful reasons to buy a new device — and one of the easiest ways to justify paying more for a Pro model. That makes the rumored lack of parity between the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max cameras more consequential than a minor spec-sheet difference.
If Apple really locks variable aperture and a more advanced telephoto system to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it could turn the camera into the clearest reason yet to spend extra on the biggest iPhone. As shoppers try to decide between nearly identical phones, camera capabilities can be the feature that closes the sale. And that could leave those who prefer a smaller handset with a tough choice to make: the best camera or the most comfortable form factor.
Why a variable-aperture camera matters
The camera in every iPhone ever built uses a fixed aperture, meaning the lens opening never changes, no matter the lighting or the shot.
But multiple rumors, dating back to at least December 2024, indicate Apple will add a variable-aperture lens to the iPhone Pro Max’s main 48-megapixel camera this year. In June, internal supplier files leaked, hinting that a new Sony IMX905 sensor could make its way to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. That leak also suggested the sensor would add variable aperture support, as reported by Notebookcheck.
However, all these leaks contained no information about the smaller iPhone 18 Pro model. That left the door open for two readings. Maybe it just wasn’t mentioned, or maybe it isn’t getting the feature at all.
Leaker Ice Universe might have just closed that door. The variable-aperture camera, the leaker says, will be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max because the mechanism needs more internal room than the smaller chassis can offer.
“Even Apple isn’t immune to the trade-off,” the leaker wrote Tuesday. (The quote from Liquid Ice’s Weibo post has been machine-translated.)
A variable aperture works like the iris in a DSLR camera. It physically widens or narrows the opening that allows light to reach the camera’s sensor. This gives photographers more control over things like depth of field and background blur.
Apple pulled this move before
This wouldn’t be the first time Apple saved a camera upgrade for its most expensive model. The iPhone 15 Pro Max came with a tetraprism lens with 5x optical zoom back in 2023. The standard iPhone 15 Pro was limited to 3x. Apple didn’t bring the 5x zoom to the smaller Pro model until a year later, with the iPhone 16 Pro.
Rumors indicate the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be slightly bigger than its predecessor to allow for a bigger battery. Reports say this extra internal space makes room for the variable aperture lens in the first place.
The iPhone 18 Pro, without a similar size increase, might not be big enough to accommodate the variable-aperture upgrade.
Telephoto zoom also might skip the smaller iPhone 18 Pro
The variable-aperture lens might not be the only camera upgrade that will appear only in the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Previously, both Pro models were expected to get a wider-aperture telephoto lens this year. That upgrade would improve low-light shots and unlock a longer zoom range.
But Ice Universe says that upgrade might also be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The bigger phone could exclusively get 6x optical zoom alongside a more advanced five-refraction prism.
However, the leaker used the word ”may” instead of stating it as fact. That means the full view from inside Apple’s supply chain remains unclear.
If both claims hold up, buyers chasing more zoom and flexible aperture control would automatically lean towards the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Screen size won’t affect that calculus either way. Apple is said to be sticking with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays for the Pro and Pro Max, matching the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
Apple hasn’t confirmed any of this, and camera specs are often known to shift right up until launch. Both iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max should arrive next month alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
