Ikea’s smart lighting range is now compatible with HomeKit. The company rolled out an update for its wireless hub today that adds the feature, as well as Google Home and Amazon Alexa integration.

Ikea promised earlier this year that its smart bulbs would get HomeKit compatibility by this fall, and the firmware update is already rolling out. It is available to all existing wireless hubs in the Tradfri range. Amazon sells a Tradfri starter kit with a hub, a remote control and two LED bulbs for $89.

For now, Tradfri LED smart bulbs are only available in white — in E12, E26 and GU10 sizes — but Ikea promised today that it will add multicolored bulbs to its lineup in October.

Ikea Tradfri smart bulbs work with Philips Hue

Today’s firmware update also allows Tradfri bulbs to be controlled by the Philips Hue bridge hub. So, if you already have a Philips Hue setup, you can add Ikea bulbs to it without purchasing Ikea’s own hub.

Once the firmware update has been installed, you’ll see Tradfri bulbs in the Hue app. You will also be able to control them using Siri commands.

Great news, its great that you can buy affordable bulbs without being locked in to one particular system forever. I’d imagine Philips wouldn’t be too happy, though.

According to Mac Stories, IKEA issued a clarification that HomeKit won’t be available until the fall, presumably when the colored bulbs are available.
