Why the Apple Watch is keeping me awake at night

There's a definite downside to Apple Watch obsession.

No gadget ever caused me to lose as much sleep as the Apple Watch.

I wish I could forget about Apple’s shiny new smartwatch, but the damned thing has me under its spell. It’s the curse of Cupertino, and I’m just another hapless a victim.

The shocking thing is I don’t even own an Apple Watch yet, despite my best efforts. On preorder day, I set my iPhone alarm for 3 a.m. so I could be one of the first to buy a $400 Apple Watch Sport sight unseen.

Things didn’t exactly go smoothly — the Apple Store app choked on my order at first, and added some gibberish to my shipping address. Half-awake, I fumbled my way through the preorder process, making errors that ate up precious minutes. By the time I got the confirmation email at 3:12 a.m., shipping times on the space gray Sport model I’d ordered had slipped to May. (Somehow I ended up ordering two of the watches, which is fine, but it’s an indicator of just how frazzled my brain was in the middle of the night.)

Now I, like thousands of others, find myself watching and waiting for an Apple Watch to arrive.

The launch of Apple’s “most personal product” was highly irregular (although Apple is no stranger to slipping shipment dates). There was no camping in line outside an Apple Store to snag one of the first to roll off the delivery trucks, thanks to Cupertino’s online-only sales strategy for the wearable. Shipping times slipped immediately, especially for the more manly versions (models with black Sport bands, space black stainless steel models, 42 mm case versus the arguably more feminine 38 mm, etc.).

Nothing but the least-expensive, most traditionally masculine model — the black Apple Watch Sport — appealed to me (although the Milanese loop is quite fetching).

The other Sport models, with their brightly colored bands, seemed like a ridiculous fashion statement ripped out of the neon-drenched ’80s. The midrange stainless steel Apple Watch seemed too pricey for a first-gen device that will undoubtedly be outdated in months, not years. And don’t get me started on the gold Apple Watch Edition models, which were designed for tech and fashion elitists (and poser braggarts like Kanye West).

I was cruelly disappointed by the long wait time for the black Sport model, but hey — that’s what happens when you order the most popular version of a new Apple product. There was a brief window — as in a couple of minutes — during which I could have opted for a petite model or one with a colored band, but I stuck to my guns and went with the manly option like so many others.

Since then, Apple has listed my order status as “Processing Items.” The delivery window, May 13 to May 27, is now open and some naive part of me hoped Apple would under-promise and over-deliver on this one. When the 13th came and went without the long-hoped-for email saying my credit card had been charged, my Apple Watch angst got bumped up a level.

Five stages of Apple Watch grief

The wait seems interminable. At this point, I think I’ve moved through all the five stages of loss and grief when it comes to the Apple Watch.

Denial: When my order went through and showed a delivery date long after the April 24 launch, I figured Apple would magically come through earlier than expected. (Also isolation, because I was in the middle of the sticks in Ohio when preorders started.)

Anger: When April 24 rolled around and my co-worker’s watch arrived, I quietly seethed because my preorder hadn’t budged.

Bargaining: I’m not going to admit to trying to make a deal with the gods of Cupertino to never rail about the new MacBook’s sadistic lack of ports or an ill-conceived U2 album giveaway if my Apple Watch appeared early. But does looking for an Apple Watch deal on eBay count? (Maybe this is really just more denial — or straight-up delusion.)

Depression: I’ve been in a blue funk ever since I discovered that the space gray Apple Watch Sport with the black band was the most highly sought-after model, and thus one of the slowest to catch up on fulfillments. All I had to do that fateful morning was settle for a periwinkle blue band … woe is me.

Acceptance: At this point, I’ve accepted the fact that my Apple Watch will arrive when it arrives. I feel slightly gypped by the fact that even Tim Cook’s supply-chain wizardry couldn’t enable him to deliver in a substantial way on the April 24 Apple Watch launch date, but there’s literally nothing I can do to change that at this point.

We’re all in this together

I can take heart in the fact that it’s not just me obsessively checking my shipping status like a crackhead with OCD: The web is loaded with preorderers begging for information about ship dates and how they correlate to exact times that orders were placed. There’s even a Google Docs spreadsheet set up by one industrious Apple fan to track the details of Apple Watch preorders and delivery dates in the U.K.

For me, last night was an especially miserable exercise in Apple Watch anxiety. I spent the night tossing, turning and fretting. It was unlike anything I can remember since those college crushes, when the flames of love and longing burned so bright in my idiot flesh.

Now some small part of my brain is apparently nervous because the credit card I used has been updated since I placed the Apple Watch orders. I woke up repeatedly last night, imagining in my stuporous half-slumber that Apple had emailed me to say the order had been canceled because my card was no good. The dream was so believable I can almost remember reading the emails.

I was awash in a sweaty mix of horror and mortification: How could I have been so stupid to upgrade my credit card in preparation for a trip to Europe? Would Apple cancel my order? How would I live another month without a precious Apple Watch?

The truth is, Apple hasn’t emailed me yet. About anything, at least since the order confirmation from April 10. The nightmare about the canceled order was a figment of my overstimulated imagination. (It’s possible that Dark Sky‘s burbling notifications about impending drizzle, a rarity in the middle of California’s massive drought, woke me in the middle of the night, giving my fevered brain just enough input to start obsessing once again over my Apple Watch order.)

In the cool gray light of day, I can see it’s an unnatural obsession. I understand it’s not cool to constantly eye my co-worker’s Apple Watch with more than a hint of jealousy (even though his is a prissy 38 mm Sport with a gleaming white band). Objectively I know the Apple Watch is just another gadget to add to the mix, another learning curve to endure.

Then I look down at my naked wrist, and I feel the desire once again, and I have to count to nine and let it go or I’ll be heading to the Apple Store page one more time to start feebly hit the refresh button in vain.

But I must stay strong. I’m like Captain Ahab, engaged in a manly quest, patiently awaiting the appearance of the great white whale, that thing I cannot have but cannot forget.

If only I had ordered a little white Apple Watch.

Just to add salt to the wound . . . I ordered my wife’s Apple Sport Watch (38mm White band) from the Apple Store in Canada on May 8, we got it on May 13. For some reason shipping times in Canada are way better than the US . . .

Same thing happened to me… Ordered the 38 stainless with the black sport band last week with a June 5-12 ship date and just got it yesterday. We live in NY.

This article could be written by me. I ordered de SS 42mm with the rubber band in germany and got my confirmation after about 10 minutes – also shipping within 4-6 weeks. On wednesday afternoon I got a message that Apple took my money from the credit card, 4 h later the order status changed to “preparing for shipment”. Finally I received my watch today! Hope for you and every other they receive it shortly too…!

The 38s were much faster than the others. Same here, ordered on the 23rd of April, delivered 5 days later.

I got lucky. I stopped by Maxfield in Los Angeles on the Monday after launch and placed an order for the space grey with black band and had it on my wrist the next day. Now just waiting for my blue sport band and blue leather loop to ship.

  5. Great article, and sadly, very true. I placed my order for a 42mm Apple Watch Sport (Space Grey with Black band) the next day after pre-orders started. My watch has been processing ever since, with a delivery date of 5/29 to 6/11. Still, like most people who are waiting, I check the status every day, hoping to see “Shipping Soon”.

I ordered my Space Black Apple Watch with a Space Black link band on April 10th, at 3:03am EST, less than 2 minutes after the watch went on sale. I have yet to have my credit card charged and my order updated from “Processing” to “Shipping.” Really, Apple? I’m not in your queue after ordering less than 120 seconds after the watch went on sale? Ridiculous. The only good thing is that the Space Black watch with the Space Black link band is clearly the best looking version of the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Edition looks totally fay compared to the rugged-looking Space Black Apple Watch. And the Stainless and Sport look a little too glittery for my taste. The Space Gray Sport looked pretty good — and that was my second choice — but I made the fatal error of thinking Apple would expedite the higher-priced versions. Wrong.

This article spoke to my heart, as I am in the same boat. I had a relapse today and checked the order status of my Apple Sport Watch 42mm Space Gray (which has been saying July) and lo and behold it has been upgraded to 5-7 weeks! I never thought that slight of an upgrade in status could bring so much joy to my life.

It’s like you took my life and made a blog post out of it. The worst part is that I set my alarm for 2 a.m. cst to get my order in asap, but then rolled over and went back to sleep thinking “this is stupid” when it went off. I didn’t make my order (42 mm, space grey, black band) until I got to work the next day, and now I have an expected delivery date of February 31, 2075.

    I blame myself.

I’m a guy and I bought the 38mm Space Grey Sport with black band and I love it, you get used to the size really fast, I have medium sized wrists and I don’t think the 38 is small at all.

I ordered the pink 38mm medium modern buckle at 2:06 a.m. on April 10 and my order is still in processing mode. I am glad to know it is not just me in OCD mode. My husband keeps making fun of me but I cannot stop.

    • Stacey Turner says:

I also ordered pink 38mm. What is your delivery date range? I ordered 5/7 and have estimate of 6/3 as earliest date. This article was great. Comforting to know I’m not alone with OCD status check.

  11. Khetix says:

I ordered my 38mm Space grey watch (sport with black band) two days after pre-orders went up. It was scheduled for a June delivery…but received it today! :-)
I have obsessively checked the order page, too.

  12. Chris Lewis says:

Finally got mine (42mm black) in UK two days ago, ordered at 8:02 am on launch day! I feel your pain (well, did – not any more!) ;-)

  13. Fonej says:

Still July for my 42mm with black s band :( – ordered May 2nd

  14. Gabe says:

I caved in (got tired of waiting until July for mine) and bought one on Craigslist. It was an extra $40, but way worth it!

  15. Sven M says:

I am glad I am not the only one dealing with this… I ordered my black on black 42mm sport back in April. All it says is June. I have kept hoping with all my might that it would ship sooner, but I am beside myself worried that it will be late June… I know Apple had issues with the taptic engine out of China.. I think Steve Jobs would have been all over them in his prime.. I love Apple products but this has been depressing.

  16. Jon Cavallary says:

Looks like things are looking up..I was hoping Monday (today) would be the day. Plus on the east coast its shipping from PA. Ill have it tomorrow.

  17. BakariC says:

I’m not losing any sleep over it, but in feel your pain. Mine’s not due to arrive until late June. But the more I read about the watch, the more I keep wondering if it’s going to be that useful to me. I don’t need just another gadget that’s going require more tapping and scrolling. But we’ll see.
