American Express has reportedly confirmed that AmEx users in Canada will be able to use Apple Pay this week, beginning Tuesday, November 17.

This is in keeping with what Tim Cook said during Apple’s recent monster earnings call, during which he said that AmEx is bringing Apple Pay to Canada and Australia this year, while it will arrive in Spain, Singapore, and Hong Kong in 2016.

There’s no word of a launch date for any of the other markets mentioned.

American Express’ Canadian debut is certainly a step forward, although it won’t affect too many users. Not many Canadians hold AmEx cards, while the number of stores which accept the card is also limited.

AmEx was one of the initial credit card companies which reached an agreement with Apple for its NFC payments system. U.S.-based American Express customers have been able to use Apple Pay since September 2014. This August the company became the first major credit card provider to allow corporate card holders to pay using Apple Pay.

I might use my Amex for this. Currently I really only have it for Front of the Line ticket access.
