There are few game franchises I poured more time and energy into as a kid than SimCity. From the mid-1990s, the classic metropolis-building strategy games were guaranteed a place on whichever computer I owned at the time.

Jump forward to 2018, and the not-dissimilar Pocket City has just landed in the App Store. And if you’re a fan of Will Wright’s construction classic, this loving tribute will certainly appeal. Check out the trailer below.

One of the best iOS indie games gets a massive update

By

Death Road
Good zombie-bashing fun!
Photo: Rocketcat

The superb Death Road to Canada is about to get even better. A madcap mix of randomly-generated zombie survival RPG, action game, and text-based interactive fiction game, this bonkers title is one of my favorite iOS games out there.

One of the things that makes it so good? The fact that its developers have released a constant stream of updates since its launch in March 2017. Far from simple bug fixes, these updates have given player a slew of new content to put them through their paces. Here’s what the latest “Gizzard” update adds to the formula:

How big? Big enough that, after just three months on iOS, it has already taken in $100 million in worldwide player spending on Apple’s mobile platform alone. No matter how you slice it, that’s very impressive.

Valve Steam
Enjoy Remote Play Together today.

Valve is making a huge change that’s going to have a massive impact on the content you see in the Steam Store. The company is doing away with human curation and allowing everything to be sold through its platform.

Valve says it should be up to players to decide what kinds of games they play, while developers should have the freedom to choose what kinds of games they make. However, it will be creating new tools that give shoppers greater control over what appears in their Steam Store.

macOS Mojave changes spell doom for indie Mac games

Apple is making life a lot harder for smaller game studios.

A big change Apple is making with macOS Mojave could make it more difficult for indie developers to build cross-platform games.

Apple is pushing game creators to drop OpenGL in favor of its own Metal API, which isn’t supported by third-party platforms. It may mean smaller game development teams are forced to choose between releasing on macOS or other operating systems.
