Thanks to the Illum, we may need to reconsider what the word “picture” means. Lytro’s game-changing camera takes “living images” that can be refocused and explored in 3-D, like some kind of precursor to a hologram.

As a light-field camera, the Illum does this by capturing the direction of every ray of light in an image, an advanced new imaging technology that’s being put to amazing use in creating virtual reality experiences. We’re thrilled to offer a Cult of Mac exclusive on the Lytro Illum for just $339.99 — that’s almost $1,000 off list price!

Brand new, but familiar

The Illum puts the amazing capability of a light-field camera into a familiar SLR body form, which fits nicely in the hand and includes trusty features like autofocus and a variety of exposure settings. You can also apply filters, which are still very much a thing, and specialized image-management software makes it easy to get your Illum shots looking just the way you want them.

Overall, this is a compact, durable and lightweight tool for making pictures unlike any you’ve ever seen — and they are perfectly tuned for sharing and interacting with online.

To immediately take an extra $30 off the already low Cult of Mac Deals price of $369.99, just enter the coupon code LYTRO30 when you check out at the Cult of Mac Store.

I’ve been using the same camera for way too long. This one has mixed reviews, but spec wise it’s slightly better than my DSLR and I can finally be rid of my CF card reader.

This intrigued me when it first came out, but couldn’t really justify paying $1000+ for it. Now that it’s a lot cheaper, seems like a good purchase. Looks very nice too. Thanks for posting about it!

Edit: I should edit this and say some things are slightly better.
