Which is better? Google Assistant or Siri... check out the battle in today's video. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Google Assistant for iOS was released at Googleās latest I/O event. Having never tried it (being an Apple fanboy and all) I thought it was only fair to put the two virtual assistants head to head.
Thereās still a lot Google needs to fix such as being able to open apps other than itās own. But check out the head to head battle in my video below.

The great thing about Mac setups is that they can all be completely different. While one person may dream of a super minimalist science lab-type room, another may want an inspiring, comfortable haven. Thatās what makes this weekās iSetups submissions so great.
iSetups is our new show that highlights the best Apple-centric setupsĀ submitted by our viewers. (Youāll also get plenty of tips and tricks for how you can improve your own setup.) Check them out for yourself in the video below, as well as full breakdowns and links to featured products.
Apple's Smart Battery case has got me charged! Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Appleās own battery case, cleverly titled the Smart Battery Case, has been on the market for over two years now. I hadĀ never really taken an interest in it; Ā it was just another battery case, only this one looked like it was pregnant with an iPod.
That was until last week, when I was desperately in need of some form of charger for my iPhone and decided to pick one up. Since then, my thoughts on what was just an ugly, overpriced battery case have totally changed.
Check out the video below to find out whyĀ itās earned a place in my heart ā and is now my favorite iPhone case.
Worried about malware? Do something about it. Photo: Ste Smith
Over the past few weeks a new Mac malware called OSX/Dok has been all overĀ the news. The Trojan horse accessed userās Macs through email phishing. Once opened, it prevented usersĀ from doing anything on theirĀ Mac until theyĀ installed a bogus software update.
Malware attacks have been skyrocketing as of late, which means itās more important than ever to be aware.
In todayās video, Iām going to show you 4 ways to help keep yourĀ Mac safe from malware.
This week's Mac setups all prove monochrome can easily stand out. Photo: Powi Hart
For a Mac setup to stand out, it doesnāt need a ton of color. Take the picture above from Cult of Mac reader Powi Hart, for example. Everything in there is either white, black or silver ā and it looks fantastic.
In fact, these white-and-black-themed Apple setups have got to be some of my favorites so far. Check out this weekās threeĀ iSetups submissions in the video below. iSetups is our new show that highlights the best Apple-centric setupsĀ submitted by our viewers. (Youāll also get plenty of tips and tricks for how you can improve your own setup.)
Each of this week's Mac setups will put your wire game to shame. Photo: Richard Lopez
Good cable management is harder than it looks. I should know: Both my home office and my work office are a mess of wires, despite trying to sort things out numerous times.
Unlike my failed attempts, this weekās three iSetups submissions get it down to a fine art. iSetups is our new show that highlights the best Apple-centric setupsĀ submitted by our viewers. (Youāll also get plenty of tips and tricks for how you can improve your own setup.)
Red is definitely the color of the day in Episode 2 of iSetups, our weekly showcase of readers' Apple setups. Photo: David Meier
Some sports fans show their allegiance by decorating their cars or wearing team jerseys. For Cult of Mac readerĀ David Meier, his favorite sports team, the Texas Aggies, is a major influence on his choice of a redĀ colorĀ scheme for his desk setup.
His Aggies-themed Mac arrangement is one of several showcased in this weekās episode of iSetups, our new show that highlights the best Apple gear submitted by our viewers. (Youāll also get plenty of tips and tricks for how you can improve your own setup.)

Learn all you need to know to get the most out of your iPhone's camera. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
While iPhones have pretty much replaced standalone video cameras, they donāt offer the same level of polish that a dedicated video camera or DSLR produces. Itās true that āthe best camera is the camera you have with you,ā but you can almost always spot a video shot on a phone.
The quality gap isnāt purely due to the lenses and tech within our phones, though. Bad habits make plenty of iPhone videos look lackluster.Ā To show just how good an iPhone video can be, I put all my filmmaking knowledge to use for the montage below.
Instead of using my $3,000 video camera, I picked up my iPhone. With a minimum of accessories, I managed to produce what I think is a pretty cinematic video. You can see the results below ā and then Iāll give you some useful tips and tricks for shooting iPhone videos like a pro.
The Clear-Coat FUSION Bumper from Mobile Outfitters was put to the drop test. Did it survive? Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Philadelphia-basedĀ company Mobile Outfitters is well-known for its ultra-strong iPhone screen protectors. Now itās put all of its phone-protection know-how together to create the Fusion Bumper ā the worldās thinnest iPhone case.
At 1.9 mm thin, the Clear-Coat Fusion Bumper case for the iPhone 6, 6s and 7 has been drop-tested up to 20 feet. But, can it really survive a drop from that sort of height?
Check out the video review below to see us really put it through the test.
Henge Docks' Vertical Docking Station for MacBook Pro makes for a sleek desktop. (The Gravitas, for iPhone and iPad, helps.) Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
A recent move into a new studio put my OCD on high alert. Determined to maintain a truly āclean workspace,ā I wanted to avoid a jumble of cables slowly creepingĀ across my new desk at all costs. A MacBook Pro dock definitely seemed in order.
For a sleek solution to any pending cable chaos, I added Henge Docksā Vertical Docking Station for MacBook Pro to my desktop. So far, itās the best solution Iāve found.
Sleek, light and compact, Beats X Earphones are the perfect wireless companion. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
IāveĀ racked up dozens of hours wearing Beats X wireless earphones over the past month, and I still think they blow away the competition ā even Appleās AirPods.
For Cult of Macās latest video review, IāveĀ put together a definitive list of myĀ thoughts on the innovative earpods.

If youāre a computer scientist, you can never have too many Macs. Just ask Richard Crossley, a Ph.D. candidate currently studying āoptimization in high-performance computing to achieve maximum resource efficiency.ā

The Beats X are worth listening to. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Iāve never been a fan of Beats headphones.Ā Whenever Iāve given them a go, Iāve found the sound quality to be less than stellar, with far too much bass. So when Apple unveiled Beats X wireless headphones alongside the AirPods last fall, the weird-looking white ones grabbed my attention.
Now that Iāve had a chance to try them both, itās clear I got that backward. I give you all the details on Beats X versus AirPods in my Beats X review below.

Get the look of Apple's Milanese Loop for a fraction of the price. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
The internet brimsĀ withĀ knockoff Apple Watch bandsĀ that are nearly as good as the real dealĀ at a fraction of the price. Determining whether a knockoff is actually any good, however, is another story.
Iāve taken a look at one such band by Cambond, which mimics in appearance the popular Milanese loop by Apple. Retailing at $149, the Milanese is indeed pricey as are most of Appleās bands whereas Cambondās version is about 10 bucks.

Apple's wireless earphones are easily one of the company's best products of 2016. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Appleās EarPods have always been a go-to favorite for me. Theyāre included with every iPhone, always sound good enough for what I need, and Iāve always found them comfortable. Even going back to the good old iPod days, Iāve always kept a pair close to hand.
But now Appleās moving on into the āwireless futureā with its new AirPods. These completely wireless earphones let you listen to music and podcasts, make phone calls and talk to Siri. But just how do they measure up?
Apple's wireless AirPods have finally been released! Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Appleās AirPods were due for release in late October, but the wireless headphones didnāt becomeĀ available until last week from stores and via online ordersĀ (expect a six-week waitĀ for the latter!)
Fortunately, we were able to get hold of a pair first thing today. Check out the video below to see whatās inside the box and get our first impressions.
