Jailbreakers got an unexpected present last week when a relatively unknown hacker group released a jailbreak for iOS 7.1.1. Called “Pangu,” the jailbreak package was later determined to be safe besides a shady pirate app store installed alongside the program.
But the Pangu jailbreak isn’t all that it appears. The methods the jailbreak uses to hack your device were stolen.
The iPod touch tends to be a forgotten device compared to the iPhone and iPad, but Apple hasn’t abandoned it. In fact, the 16GB iPod touch just got supercharged, and prices have been slashed on the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models as well.
When it was released in August last year as a free-to-play game, Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time shipped with three distinct worlds and countless new plants and zombies.
But for lovers of the first game, all of the new levels, plants and enemies in Plants vs. Zombies 2 didn’t make it a total improvement over its predecessor. Notably, many of the plants from the first game — including all of the nocturnal plants — were missing.
Luckily, Plants vs. Zombies 2 is being constantly updated, and the latest update adds the nocturnal plants back to the game in a new world, appropriately called the Dark Ages.
iOS 7’s Notification Center is useful, but Apple’s made a number of improvements in iOS 8. For one thing, they dropped the ‘Missed’ tab, which was always next to useless. There’s also support for third-party widgets in Today View, as well as interactive notifications and the ability to individually dismiss notifications that are no longer applicable.
They are all good changes, but unfortunately, you need to wait until September to make use of them… that is, unless you have a jailbroken phone, in which case, a simple tweak is all you need to get an iOS 8-style Notification Center today.
With a much larger screen size, the iPhone 6 may be the most radical redesign of Apple’s smartphone ever. But with such a major redesign in the works, there’s a lot that can go wrong, and it looks like something already has: according to reports, defects in the iPhone 6’s metal chassis could lead to short supply of enough devices to go around when it launches in September.
It may seem hard to believe, but there was a time when Apple shipped computers without built-in monitor, not as an exception, but as the rule. Such was the case with the venerable Apple II, which shipped with a behemoth of a 320 x 200 CRT monitor that weighed a monstrous 22 pounds… more than a 27-inch iMac weighs today!

Purchased last year by Dropbox, Mailbox is already one of the most intuitive apps on the iPhone and iPad for rapidly reaching inbox zero. Employing a series of swipes, Mailbox users can quickly delete, archive, or save emails for later, without ever leaving the inbox screen.
But after an update yesterday evening, Mailbox got even better. A new swipe action has been added to the app, giving users the ability to swipe a message once, and automatically file away all messages that resemble it.

Let’s face it: We all have some photos on our iPhones or iPads we don’t exactly want other people seeing. When I hand my mother my iPhone to show her photos of my honeymoon in Turkey, there are some photos taken on that trip I don’t want her swiping to.
In iOS 8, you have the option to hide the photos you don’t want other people seeing in the Camera Roll, but it’s clunky and the photos still show up in other albums. A much better solution is Don’t Swipe.

Graphic designer Susan Kare is iconic — literally. The mastermind behind the friendly 32 x 32 and 16 x 16 icons used in the original Mac operating system, Kare’s work has reached more people than almost any other graphic designer on Earth.
Yet the way she stumbled into designing the icons for the Mac operating system was pretty much a lark, and in a recent presentation at the EG conference in California, Kare spoke a little bit about how she stumbled into the job.
It’s a fascinating talk, not just for the details she shares about early Mac operating system development, but also because Kare finally reveals why Apple switched from the Apple symbol to the Command key.
When the Microsoft Surface was first unveiled, one of its “iPad killing” features was splitscreen app support. Just by dragging an app to the edge of the screen, you could dock it, and run another app to the left or right… for example, playing a game while watching a movie in the corner.
It was a move designed to make the Surface more laptop-like… and one that Apple has been heavily rumored to copy in iOS 8, as tablet sales flatline. But don’t expect to see splitscreen multitasking at WWDC on Monday. Apparently it’s just not ready for showtime yet.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is usually as reliable a source as it gets when it comes to what’s in the works with Apple’s supply chain. The analyst has correctly predicted countless major new Apple products months in advance, just by tracing the threads in the supply chain spider web.
But not even Kuo is infallible. Notable Apple journalist Jim Dalrymple has shot down Kuo’s latest report, suggesting that Apple will introduce a new iMac and a lower-capacity 8GB iPhone at its Worldwide Developers Conference, with just a single word: “Nope.”
So far, we at Cult of Mac have not been big fans of Amazon’s acquisition of ComiXology. Although we’ve previously praised them as the iTunes of comic books, the first thing the e-shopping giant did upon purchasing Comixology was stop allowing you to purchase comics directly within the app on iOS, presumably to get around paying Apple its 30% cut.
It was an anti-consumer move that made the app infinitely less appealing for digital comic readers, but Amazon has now announced something that might take some of the sting out: they’re releasing a free comic a day for the next three weeks. That means 19 free comics, which should be enough to tempt anyone who lovers comics to at least download the app.
While early rumors indicated the iPhone 6 would ditch the bezel altogether in favor of an edge-to-edge display — a way of expanding the screen size without having to drastically enlarge the phone’s footprint — that no longer looks to to be the case. We will, however, likely see a much thinner bezel than on previous devices, in keeping with Apple’s design progression on both iPhone and iPad. Recently leaked images suggest the distance between the Touch ID Home button and screen looks to have been shortened, too.
Ever since the iPhone 4s was released, it hasn’t been hard to predict when Apple will release the next iPhone. In the second week of September on a Tuesday, Apple holds its annual iPhone event; ten days later, the newest iPhone is released in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, and a handful of other countries.
Following this logic, it’s pretty easy to guess that the iPhone 6 will be released on September 19th this year, after being announced on September 9th. And, in fact, that’s just what a German telecom is now predicting.

Facebook’s Chat Heads first debuted back in April, 2013 as a central UI element in the new Facebook for Android, the Facebook app on iOS, and the laughably ill-received ‘Facebook phone,’ the HTC First.
