Former US Vice President (and Apple Board Member) Al Gore Confirms “New iPhones” in October

By

screen-shot-2010-02-27-at-12-26-21-pm

Okay, we know: even though October 4th now looks solid as the announcement date for the new iPhone, we’ve been burned on these reports before. Heck, we expected the iPhone 5 announcement this month, so how do we know this October 4th is any good?

Well, short of Apple sending out invitations, we don’t, but maybe, just maybe, we can trust former vice president and influential Apple board member Al Gore on the subject, because guess what? He says the new iPhone will be out next month.

If Apple Announces The iPhone 5 On October 4th, When Will It Come Out? Sooner Than You Think

By

With All Things D and Jim Dalrymple both weighing in saying October 4th is the day that Apple will announce the next iPhone, the obvious question that follows is “how long after that until the iPhone 5 is released?”

There’s no way of telling, but here’s the good news: every generation, Apple trims down the number of days before an iOS Device’s announcement and the day it ships.

Final Cut Pro X Gets A Free 30 Day Trial, XML Import And A Lot Of Other Fixes

By

fcp_x_media_stems_export

Responding to mass rioting amongst its users, Apple promised as far back as July that they would eventually be restoring XML support in Final Cut Pro X. Now it’s finally here, along with numerous other improvements… but will this update finally drown out all the criticism?

Maybe not, but at least the addition of a 30-day free trial means no more users will drop $300 on Apple’s pro video editing software and be caught unaware by its omissions.

The iPod Touch Will Go Albino This Year… But Don’t Expect Other Big Changes

By

whiteipodtouch

We’ve heard before that while Apple will steroid charge the iPhone 5 in October, the iPod Touch isn’t likely to see a serious update. After all, short of doubling its storage space (an idea obviated by iCloud) or 3G support (which would make the iPod Touch more expensive and — yep — about as thick as an iPhone), the iPod Touch is pretty much a perfect product for the money. What more can you do to it?

The answer: not much. You just make it white and pretty much call it a day.

It’s Playing 2.0 Might Just Be The Best Answer To VLC On Your iPad

By

screen_movie

When I recommend an iPad video player, I tend to recommend CineXPlayer, which will throw pretty much any format you throw at it without converting it. It does have one crucial issue, though: it can’t handle AC3 sound.

Enter the rather awkwardly named app “It’s Playing 2.0.” Like CineXPlayer, it’ll play any video on your system, including FLV, AVI, MKV, OGG and WMV. It can load subtitles. You can scrub through a movie using variable speed controls. And it does AC3 sound! Hurrah.

Latest Version Of Redsn0w Gets Rid Of Obnoxious IPSW Downloads (Unless You’re On iOS 5)

By

Pwnage-Tool-Save-Custom-IPSW

One of the big annoyances of the jailbreaking process is downloading the right IPSW file for your jailbreak program of choice to crack. Not only are IPSW files — being mirrors of a particular iOS image — pretty huge, but Apple doesn’t distribute anything but the most recent one, which means that if you’re trying to jailbreak an older version of iOS (one, say, that still has a particular vulnerability to exploit), you need to dig around torrent sites and the like.

Fooey. Luckily, the latest version of jailbreak utility Redsno0w 0.9.9b1 gets rid of that whole IPSW business, and handles downloading them for itself.

The Mac App Store Now Warns You Before You Buy An App All Over Again

By

macappstorewarning2-254321

When the Mac App Store first came out, any app that you already had downloaded onto your machine outside of the App Store was reported as “Installed.”

Apple’s made a new change to the way the MAS handled things. Now, instead of previous apps being unavailable to purchase because they are already installed, you get a warning that asks you if you want to buy the software all over again.

I still wish Apple would figure out a way to at least give devs the option of porting over their existing customer bases to the Mac App Store, but I guess this is nice: at least it warns me if I’m about to buy the same app twice.

Well, Shoot… You Can’t Daisy Chain A Mini DisplayPort Monitor Off A Thunderbolt Cinema Display

By

thunderbolt_displays_macbook_pro

One of the cool things about Apple’s new Thunderbolt I/O standard is its daisy chaining abilities. You can string one Thunderbolt device through another one to a single Thunderbolt port with no degradation in speed or quality.

So let’s say you’ve got Apple’s old 27-inch Cinema Display, the one that connects through Mini DisplayPort. You may have gotten the notion in your head when Apple started shipping out Thunderbolt versions of the Cinema Display of daisy chaining them together. After all, why not? Other Thunderbolt peripherals can handle a Mini DisplayPort monitor. 54 horizontal inches of muilti-display splendor should easily be at your fingertips!

Think again.

How Thick Are The Branches On Apple’s Gadget Family Tree? [Infographic]

By

Apple-Ecosystem-Infographic-Time-Magazine

This fantastic infographic divvies up exactly how much of Apple’s sales comes from each branch on its tree of devices: iPhone, Mac, iPod and iPad. I’m astonished by how big the iPad has grown practically overnight from a twig to a branch: it’s about to overtake Mac sales, and doubtlessly will by the iPad 3 at latest.

The infographic appeared originally in the September 12th issue of Time Magazine. Thanks to Obama Pacman for the heads up.

How Employees Are Driving An iPad Revolution And What IT’s Doing About It

By

ipad-office-desk

Mirroring the adoption of smartphones and PDAs before it, the explosive growth of the iPad in business can be attributed almost entirely to employees’ obsession with Apple’s “magical” tablet.

The iPad’s transformation from consumer gadget to enterprise tool points the way to an employee-driven tech future in which users — not IT departments — get to choose their own gear and applications.

IT managers are learning how to adapt, fast.

This is a pretty wonderful video. Soul king and all around beautiful person Stevie Wonder made an appearance last week at a nightclub in Los Angeles and gave a little speech on helping people with disabilities.

One company that Stevie Wonder specifically highlighted? Apple. Wonder personally thanks Steve Jobs and Apple for making the technology of their iOS devices accessible for everyone, saying “There is nothing that you can do on the iPhone or iPad that I can’t do.”

Thunderbolt Cinema Displays Are Now Shipping

By

thunderbolt_display_mac_mini

If you ordered yourself one of Apple’s 27-inch Thunderbolt Cinema Displays many moons ago in some kingdom by the sea, great news, Annabel: following the release of up to date Mac firmware, Apple’s started pumping Thunderbolt displays out of its shipping warehouses this morning. So expect to soon get your grubby mitts on one, if you’re so inclined.

Nintendo Chief Says They’ll Make iOS Games Over Mario’s Dead Body

By

iPhoneplayingSuperMario

Now that Nintendo’s lucky anthropomorphic Mario star is fading, there’s been a lot of talk about the game maker looking for Princess Peach in another castle: the iOS App Store.

To speak more plainly, since Nintendo’s 3DS console is a bust, and since Apple’s App Store is such a phenomenon, there’ve been consistent rumors and shareholder insistence that Nintendo should take their cherished game properties to an iPhone near you.

Will it happen? Fat chance, Nintendo says.

Your Friends Can Now Facebook You Through Skype For Mac

By

image001-6

As part of their much ballyhooed deal with Facebook from a couple of months back, Skype has just rolled out a new version of their worse-by-the-point-release VoIP client for Mac… and what do you know, the new v5.4 beta brings Facebook support to the mix!

Depending on exactly how entangled you are in Zuckerberg’s viscous social afterbirth, that might be appealing to you. But less appealing, no doubt? Ads!
