Ed Hardy has been writing full-time about tech for 25 years, and using it for much longer than that. His intro to Apple was a Macintosh Classic II (which he still has), but now he uses a 13-inch iPad Pro as his primary computer. He’s written for NotebookReview, TabletPCReview, and Brighthand, as well as other sites.

The Moft Snap Float Folio can be folded into a stand that holds an iPad screen 4 inches above your desk. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
iPad cases that act as stands to prop up the tablet’s screen are old news. But the Moft Snap Float Folio takes the concept to a new level… literally. It can be folded to raise the iPad up to 3.8 inches so it’s easier to see. If that’s not enough, the case/stand also folds into multiple other configurations to allow the iPad to be used in different ways.
The product first launched in 2022, then recently updated it with stronger magnets for a better hold on the tablet. It’s also a bit more robust.
I wrapped my iPad Pro in the Moft’s new-and-improved case to see how easy it is to use, and how stable when used as a stand. I came away impressed.
Stardew Valley+ is only one of the games coming soon to Apple Arcade. Image: ConcernedApe
The popular farming simulator Stardew Valley will debut on Apple Arcade in July. The award-wining game promises many hours of entertainment, with farming, ranching, fighting monsters and even getting married.
In addition, Apple’s gaming subscription service will also soon add other classic titles, including Ridiculous Fishing EX, Millionaire Trivia+, Slay the Spire+ and more.
In Silo, if the lies don't kill you, the truth will. Photo: Apple TV+
Normally, you need an Apple TV+ subscription to watch the first episode of the hit sci-fi drama Silo. But it is now posted on Twitter for all to see, in its entirety.
This isn’t piracy — Apple itself shared the video Tuesday.

Basketball superstar Steph Curry will get a documentary on Apple TV+ in July. The trailer for Stephen Curry: Underrated gives a first look at the athlete’s rise to fame.
The film uses a mix of archival footage, new interviews and “intimate cinéma vérité” to explore the life of the basketball great.

Players become students at Hogwarts and engage in magical duels against dark wizards in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, which launched Tuesday. It’s a collectible card (CCG) and massively multiplayer (MMO) game, and is free to play — with in-app purchases.
There are versions for iPhone and iPad. (Android too.)

The Astropad Darkboard is a new lightweight, ergonomic drawing surface for iPad. It gives artists a place to rest their arm while drawing without covering the tablet’s screen.
After a successful launch on Kickstarter, the product is now available worldwide.

Those eager to get their hands on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max should check out a short video showing a case supposedly designed for Apple’s next flagship smartphone. This helps confirm a few details that previously leaked out.

A California hiker who broke her leg in the Angelos National Forest was able to get help thanks to the Emergency SOS via satellite service built into the iPhone 14 series.
The feature enables those range of cellular network coverage to call for rescue.
Tom Holland‘s star power helps put his Apple TV+ series near the top of the charts. Photo: Apple TV+
The Crowded Room, a psychological thriller starring Tom Holland, is bringing in plenty of viewers. For two weeks now, the Apple TV+ series has been among the most popular shows on any streaming service.
And it’s not the only Apple series doing well — Silo continues to draw a large audience, too.

UGR Tech‘s 2TB SSD definitely isn’t top quality, but it works. And it puts less strain on your credit card. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The UGR Tech Portable SSD External Hard Drive 2TB offers a lot of storage for an exceedingly low price — it’s available from Cult of Mac Deals for just $34.99. I could even call that a suspiciously low price, because rival USB-C drives sell for about four times as much. So I ordered one and tested it out.
I discovered why the external SSD is so very cheap, but also that it’s not a scam or a ripoff … as long as you understand the significant speed limitation of this 2TB drive.
(Update: This incredibly popular 2TB external SSD sold out multiple times in 2023. Now it’s back in stock at Cult of Mac Deals, although the price has gone up to $44.97.)
Retro Goal+ is one of three recent additions to Apple Arcade. Screenshot: New Star R&D/Apple
The sports games Retro Bowl+ and Retro Goal+ hit the Apple Arcade on Friday. And Bold Moves+ was added earlier in June. These are the latest classic games to make their way to the subscription service, and join many others already available.
This is in addition to all the original games that are Apple Arcade exclusives.
Most of the Macs that consumers buy look like this. Photo: Apple
If you own a Mac, it’s almost certainly a MacBook rather than a desktop. New data from a market research firm shows that Apple’s notebooks made up the lion’s share of macOS sales over the last year.
Of desktop models, the all-in-one iMac is the most popular. On the other hand, the cheapest Mac is among the lowest-selling, according to the analysts.
Apple wants developers to make Vision Pro applications, just not these types. Photo: Apple
While Apple is encouraging developers to write software for the Vision Pro AR headset, there are some types of applications it doesn’t want. Camera-related apps and movement-based ones can’t be made.
Some of the restrictions don’t seem to be about privacy but instead result from limitations in the hardware. Others are a mystery.

An integrated tracking tag sets HyperPack Pro apart from other high-end backpacks. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The HyperPack Pro has room for a 16-inch MacBook plus plenty of other gear in three big pockets, three more smaller ones plus more inner pockets. But what sets the backpack apart is a built-in tracker using Apple’s Find My technology so it can easily be found if misplaced or accidentally left behind.
I field tested the bag from Hyper by taking it on holiday. Here’s everything I love about it … and a few small issues.
iOS 17 will include home screen widgets with buttons and other controls. Graphic: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
A long-requested feature is finally coming to iOS 17: interactive widgets. With these, you can control apps on the device directly from the convenience of the home screen.
iOS 17 is still in beta so not everyone has access to the new feature yet. I do, so here is what it’s like to use it on an iPhone (and iPad, too.)
Developers now have access to a variety of resources to help them design, develop, and test apps for Apple Vision Pro. Photo: Apple
Turning the Apple Vision Pro headset from an announcement into a shipping product took a big step forward Wednesday with the release of the visionOS SDK. This includes the software tools developers will use to write applications for the AR headset that Apple unveiled earlier this month.
Apple also said it will open developer labs around the world soon, giving coders a chance for some hands-on time with Vision Pro, which won’t launch until 2024.
Almost every Apple computer just got operating system updates designed to deal with pesky bugs. Photo: Cult of Mac/Egor Kamelev/Pexels
Apple just introduced a slew of operating system updates. That includes iOS 16.5.1, macOS 13.4.1, watchOS 9.5.2 and iPadOS 16.5.1, which fix bugs in the most recent versions.
But it also released bug-fix updates for older versions of the operating systems going back as far as 2020.
What hasn’t yet arrived on Wednesday are the much-anticipated second round of betas for iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma.
Apple’s anti-union efforts have again been ruled illegal. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
A National Labor Relations Board judge ruled Tuesday that Apple used illegal means to convince employees at one of its retail stores in New York not to form a union.
The judge issued several instructions to Apple that might assist in future unionizing efforts at the company’s 270-plus U.S. retail locations.
A modern adaptation of the silent classic Metropolis will not happen. Image: Cult of Mac
Turns out Apple TV+ is not going to turn Fritz Lang’s sci-fi classic Metropolis into a series. The ongoing writers’ strike reportedly caused the project to be shut down.
And it’s not the only Apple TV+ project to run afoul of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
That’s open less password you’ll have to remember. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Our password-free future just took a step closer. Apple has begin rolling out signing onto its online store can with a passkey instead of a password. The change allows shoppers to access the site with Face ID or Touch ID. The same is true for iCloud.com and Apple’s dev site.
However, the feature is still in testing so it’s not available for everyone. It requires a beta of iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS Sonoma.
There are a lot of cool Apple Watch faces, all created by Apple. Photo: Apple
A high-level Apple exec recently answered a question that bugs many Apple Watch users: Why aren’t third-party watch faces allowed?
It comes down to the company not allowing the wearable’s all-important home screen to be replaced by a non-Apple alternative that might not prove as reliable.
iPhone 14 is easier to disassemble than its predecessors, but Apple might have to go further. Photo: iFixit
The European Parliament passed sweeping legislation last week intended to make recycling batteries easier. The new rules will require Apple to redesign iPhone and iPad so their batteries can be replaced by users. (Android devices will face the same mandate.)
This will be the second major hardware change to Apple products to result from EU legislation. iPhones soon will come with a USB-C port in place of Lightning because of a European requirement.
