The iPhone 5: A Smartphone Of Extraordinary Grace [Review]

By

Beautiful.
Beautiful.

After months of rumors and speculation, the iPhone 5 is finally here, featuring a thinner, lighter design, a taller 4-inch display, LTE, the new Lightning connector, redesigned EarPods, and more. It’s the first major iPhone redesign in twenty-seven months, and the first iPhone ever to change the aspect ratio of the device, to have LTE, to use a new connector or to have new headphones, but despite this, many have criticized the iPhone 5 for being boring.

What’s the truth? Is the iPhone 5 dull, or is it a major leap forward for Apple’s most iconic device? We’ve spent the weekend reviewing a 64GB white-and-silver iPhone 5 on Verizon’s LTE network, and put it through its paces. Here’s what we thought.

Apple’s iPhone 5 User Guide Tells You Everything You Need To Know About Your New iPhone And iOS 6

By

IMG_0148

With every major release of iOS and a new iPhone, Apple typically offers its official user guide online for free. What’s odd is that Apple doesn’t promote this resource at all, yet it’s still available. Each iOS device purchase comes with a little booklet to help familiarize a new customer with the basics of the device and iOS itself, but the full user guide is much more thorough and extensive.

Apple has an official user guide out for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6. The 365 page guide is available for anyone to view on the web, and Apple has also made it available for free in the iBookstore.

Motorola’s “iLost” Anti-Apple Ad Points Out The Painful Truth About iOS 6 Maps [Mapgate]

By

moto_0000_location-1-2

Companies like Google and Samsung aren’t exactly known for making the best anti-Apple propaganda, but the latest attack ad from Motorola has a particularly painful amount of truth to it. Everyone knows that Apple’s Maps app in iOS 6 sucks right now, and competitors are obviously going to latch onto any negative Apple press they can. That’s why Motorola’s ad says that the “DROID RAZRM M” (serious name) promises to not get you “iLost.”

While most of these Android ads have been pathetic attempts at calling out the iPhone’s flaws, I can’t really fault Motorola (who is owned by Google) for going with the Maps angle. It’s no surprise that none of the recent iPhone 5 ads mention Maps at all. If Apple doesn’t fix the negative inertia its generated with Maps in iOS 6, it could have a serious PR problem on its hands.

To Apple’s credit, iOS 6 Maps is being compared to Google Maps, a decade-old, matured platform that Google has invested thousands upon thousands of man hours into. Apple’s Maps will get there, it’s just going to take a little time.

iPhone 5: How Can Apple Possibly Top This? [First Impression]

By

iphone5impressions
Holy crap.

Every review of the iPhone 5 makes great efforts to talk about how light it is. I’ve read those reviews over and over again since Tuesday. Even so, when taking my iPhone 5 out of the box for the first time, I so misjudged the weight that it went flying from my fingers and onto the floor. This is lightness to the point of ephemerability. It’s so hard to believe, and yet it’s testament to the iPhone 5’s construction that such a thin slate of glass and aluminum doesn’t break apart between your fingers like a communion wafer when you touch it, let alone when you — as I did — accidentally fling it across a room. But my iPhone 5 wasn’t even scratched.

This isn’t our review of the iPhone 5. Far from it: we’ll be posting an in-depth review first thing on Monday morning, once we’ve had a chance to put it through its paces in full. These are our first impressions, and let’s say it right off the bat: from the second it comes out of the box, the iPhone 5 seems like such a leap over the iPhone 4S that it’s like picking up your first MacBook Air after lugging around a lunky 2008 MacBook Pro for years. In a couple of years, Apple has improved the design of the iPhone 4/4S so much that the latter now seems absolutely antediluvian.

Apple Speaks Out On iOS 6 Maps Issue, Urges Patience

By

This has got to be embarrassing.
This has got to be embarrassing.

Apple’s new Maps app has gotten a ton of complaints since iOS 6 officially released this week, and with good reason. Heck, right here at Cult of Mac, we have a feature on how to fix the iOS 6 Maps experience, as well as a gallery on some of the worst imagery from the Maps app itself.

Apple spoke out today about the issue in a statement to AllThingsD, saying, essentially, that people need to be more patient.

Lines For The iPhone 5 Already Getting Crazy, As Apple Expects Lines Tomorrow To Persist “All Day Long, Into The Evening”

Australian Apple fans waiting in line for the iPhone 5.

If you’re planning on waiting in line for an iPhone 5 tomorrow, be warned: judging by the numbers of people already waiting outside some of the big Apple Stores, the iPhone 5 launch is looking like it’s going to be an absolute zoo. There have never been this many people in line this far ahead of an official Apple product launch, ever. And Apple themselves anticipate long lines outside of their stores “all day long, into the evening.”

Apple Accused Of Ripping Off iPad Clock Design In iOS 6 From The Swiss

By

clock-copiers-e1348165431748

One of the best new additions of iOS 6 for iPad owners is the fact that not only do we finally get the iOS 6 clock app, but it’s absolutely gorgeous… easily Apple’s most attractive app, in my opinion.

The app’s good looks aren’t going unnoticed… and that might spell bad news for Apple. Apparently, the Swiss Federal Railway Service is livid over the clock used in the new app, says they own the trademark on the design.

Motorola Going After The Whole Kit And Caboodle, Looking To Ban Just About Every Apple Product Under The Sun

By

post-191928-image-eb361e99f873b4466825080af273b40d-jpg

Motorola is looking to bring down the ban hammer on almost every Apple product out there, including every Mac OSX computer. I have no idea if Motorola is just looking to throw spaghetti at the wall or what, but they have a long list of infringements that apparently the International Trade Commission has agreed to investigate.

How To Fix iOS 6 Maps [Feature]

By

My, though, aren't these new maps purty?
My, though, aren't these new maps purty?

A lot has been written over the last day or so about the crappy maps in iOS 6, and the fact that Apple’s new data engine doesn’t live up to its pretty new map tiles and spectacular flyover feature.

I thought exactly the same thing when I first installed a beta of iOS 6 on my iPad a month or two back. But while Apple’s maps are definitely a step back in many ways, it’s not all as bad as it seems. Not quite anyway.

But guess what? If you’re willing to use a couple extra apps until Apple fixes things, you can get everything back that you’re missing.

Didn’t Preorder? How To Get An iPhone 5 A.S.A.P. [Buyer’s Guide]

By

iphone5

The iPhone 5 pre-orders kicked off last Friday at 12:00 a.m. PST and it only took a few hours for delivery estimates to start to slip well into October. A little perspective – it took nearly a day (approximately 22 hours) for last year’s iPhone 4S pre-sale to begin to run out; the iPhone 5 did the same in about an hour.

Hopefully Apple will be able to keep up with the demand for the iPhone 5. But if not here are a few tips based on what we have learned from past iPhone releases that might help lessen headaches and improve your chances of getting your hands on an iPhone 5 this season.

Samsung To Add iPhone 5 To Patent Infringement Suit After It Has ‘Analyzed The Device’

Samsung takes aim at the iPhone 5.

Rumors had suggested that Samsung would add Apple’s iPhone 5 to the list of devices involved in a patent infringement suit between the two companies, and it looks like that’s going to happen. The Korean company has confirmed that it expects the latest iPhone to infringe the same patents the iPhone 4S does, and that it will be adding the handset to its case after it has had time to “analyze” it.

Irish Minister Concerned That The Crumminess Of iOS 6 Maps Will Result In Planes Crashing In Dublin

By

This is not an airport, iOS 6.
This is not an airport, iOS 6.

iOS 6’s Maps is the biggest criticism of Apple’s new mobile operating system. In short, it’s clearly years behind Google Maps, which previously powered Maps in past versions of iOS. Most of the time, complaints about Apple’s new Maps accuse the latter of being under-developed and unreliable compared to Google Maps, but the Irish government has a different concern: they are worried that iOS 6 Maps will result in pilots crashing their airplanes directly into a park.

The Funniest Video You’ll See About The iPhone 5’s Height Increase [Humor]

By

post-191790-image-6e101d98aa32576cdafa7b0933f4dbb0-jpg

I usually hate these fake Apple parody ads for being both smug and witless, but I laughed pretty hard at this one by Satire. Featuring a number of earnestly hipstered faux-Apple employees with names like “Joe Bloggs” and “Alan Smithee,” the video takes the Obi-Wan iPhone 20 joke that’s been going around and actually runs with it, showing exactly how Cupertino would pitch a phone the length of a yardstick.

The touted features Satire comes up with are great. Panorama photos without moving the iPhone! Scrolling without using mulitouch! Amazing reception due to having your iPhone in physical closer proximity to orbiting satellites! And so much more. The app ideas are great too. And I love the tag line: “The longest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone.”

Here’s Every Single iOS App Apple Updated In The App Store Today [Roundup]

By

A lot of Apple's own apps got updated in the App Store this afternoon.
A lot of Apple's own apps got updated in the App Store this afternoon.

Following the public release of iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 earlier today, Apple has pushed a host of notable updates for many of its additional iOS apps in the App Store. Apps like Podcasts got iCloud sync and iOS 6 support, while smaller updates have been seeded to bring simple iOS 6 compatibility. Other popular apps from the iLife and iWork iOS suites received updates today too.

Here’s a list of all the iOS app updates Apple released today:

After Apple was awarded two prestigious D&AD (British Design & Art Direction) awards, Jony Ive and the rest of the Cupertino company’s design team flew to London this week to pick them up. There were 16 Apple employees in attendance, and Ive, who is responsible for Apple’s most iconic designs, received a standing ovation when he took to the stage.

Hilarious Samsung Slide Compares Apple’s Request For Damages To The Mars Rover

By

We get it, Samsung. It's a lot of money.
We get it, Samsung. It's a lot of money.

Check out the image above, and then marvel that Samsung put this together for the court case it lost to Apple a couple weeks back in US District Court. Judge Lucy Koh understandably excluded the slide from Samsung’s final argument documents – these comparisons have nothing to do with the actual merits of the case, but rather show that Apple was asking for a lot of money in damages.

Regardless of the facts, though, this image is pretty hilarious. It does show what a crazy amount of money companies are taking in and/or losing in our current “touch economic times,” rendering the phrase meaningless when set next to these kinds of figures.

Apparently The iPhone 5 Has A Laser Keyboard And Projects Holographic Images… No Wonder It Sold Out So Fast [Humor]

No other news agency consistently fails as much as Fox. Take for instance this Fox 5 reporter in NY who decided to head down to the 5th Avenue Apple Store to interview a few of the crazies already lining up for the “most amazing, best Apple product ever.” I was shaking my head until the reporter started listing off some of the new features of the iPhone 5 and let me tell you… I’m packing my sleeping bag as soon as I finish this post!

Leica’s ‘Budget’ M-E Rangefinder Is Still A Rip-Off

By

Leica? I love 'er!
Leica? I love 'er!

Leica's new M-E looks to be the boutique camera maker's "budget" model, an answer to the Fujifilm X-Pro and the Sony RX1 cameras. Only being a Leica, the company has cut back on an already sparse feature-set whilst keeping a ridiculous price. The M-E will cost you $5,450 for the body only when it goes on sale this month.

If Apple Made Nasty Attack Ads As Badly As Samsung, They’d Look Like This [Humor]

By

LTUb5

Remember Samsung’s dishonest, offensive “It Doesn’t Take A Genius” ad that, as my colleague Alex heath wonderfully put it, tried to proclaim the Samsung Galaxy SIII to be a better handset than the iPhone 5 by making its “contrived spec list” longer?

Well, two can play at that game. If you’re going to selectively leave features off of one phone to make yours look like you can do more at it, well, we’re only a quick Photoshop away from turning the tables.

As a final note, I love what this ad says about Samsung. They still just don’t get it: they’re still playing the spec game when Apple has built its billions upon the true fact that no one gives a shit about specs anymore. The proof is in the experience.

Timbuk2 Factory Tour Highlights Offshoring Issues at Apple [Gallery]

By

Timbuk2_factory_06_CULT_OF_MAC_APPLE_BAGS_MANUFACTURING_JOBS

SAN FRANCISCO — American companies are rightly proud to show off any manufacturing facilities supporting jobs during the current recession, and San Francisco-based Timbuk2 is no exception. This week, the company known for its messenger bags showed us the hangar here in the Mission district where workers cut and sew colorful swaths of material and help contribute to the local manufacturing economy.

As a group of reporters was ushered through the trendy open-plan set-up, it made us think about what a factory tour of Apple’s manufacturing plants would be like. We’ll never know, of course. Tim Cook would never allow a tour like this one.

ITC Judge Rules Apple Did Not Infringe Samsung Patents

By

Yet another win for Apple.
Yet another win for Apple.

Add another mark in the “winning” column for Apple today, as a judge from the US branch of the International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled that Apple did not infringe any of the four patents brought before the commission by Samsung.

Judge James Gildea posted his ruling in a short notice on the court’s website. He also found that Samsung was unable to prove that it had a “domestic industry” that used the patents in question. This last bit has to do with a requirement of the ITC that the patents being brought before the court must actually be used in the same country as that court. This ruling is preliminary; the full ITC panel will review the ruling early next year.

Apple Says It’s “Blown Away By Customer Response” To The iPhone 5

By

According to the first day of preorders, the iPhone 5 is anything but disappointing.
According to the first day of preorders, the iPhone 5 is anything but disappointing.

Shipping estimates for iPhone 5 preorders slipped to 2-3 weeks only a few short hours after they were made available this morning, and initial stock continues to dwindle as the day wears on. Apple is expected to shatter the previous preorder sales record it set with the iPhone 4S, and demand for a new iPhone has never been higher.

Although specific preorder sales numbers have not yet been released, Apple has said that it’s “blown away” by how well the iPhone 5 has done so far.
