iOS 9 has only been out since last Wednesday, but already it’s smashing records — being named the fastest case of iOS adoption in history, with more than 50 percent of devices already using iOS 9.
“iOS 9 is also off to an amazing start, on pace to be downloaded by more users than any other software release in Apple’s history,” said Phil Schiller, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a statement issued by Apple.
By contrast, Android’s latest mobile OS, Lollipop, sits at barely more than 20 percent, despite being out for almost 11 months. Comparing iOS 9 to Android, the new Apple mobile OS is currently installed on a higher percentage of devices than any Android OS — with the widest Android adoption being 39.2 percent for KitKat, which has been out since September 2013.
The super-speedy adoption for iOS 9 is even more impressive considering the problematic time many users had downloading it. Large numbers reported receiving “Software Update Failed” error messages after Apple’s servers were overwhelmed by demand.
It seems that even analysts who were positive about iOS 9’s chances have been surprised, too. Mobile app intelligence platform Crittercism previously predicted that iOS 9 would only hit 50 percent usage by day 25 — which would still have been 3 days faster than iOS 8 managed.
Good show, Apple!
