Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has been chomping at the bit about an Apple TV since 2011, but according to a new research note he sent to clients Thursday, Apple has a good chance of finally releasing its new television at the company’s reported September 9 event.
Seriously, this time. OK, maybe. Let’s call it 50/50.
Munster thinks the new Apple TV will incorporate Siri, HomeKit and possibly an Apple TV app store. He also thinks there may be something to Jimmy Iovine’s recent musings about television being a good fit for human curation, a la Apple Music.
“We believe this points to some type of curated video offering, although the timing could be beyond the September Apple TV launch,” Munster says.
In terms of channels, he suggests that “Apple’s eventual content offering will include the majority of the network channels plus major cable offerings like ESPN, AMC, TNT, and TBS.” Apple is reportedly brokering deals with smaller stations around the U.S. for affiliate TV.
Interestingly, Munster references Sling TV’s $20-plus per month as a possible comparison. Given that previous rumors have placed Apple’s new streaming TV service in the $30 to $40 monthly range, this could mean Apple is looking to be as competitive on the TV side of things as it is on the music side.
Then again, Gene Munster has dashed our hopes before.

I like the term “definitely maybe”. That should Apples motto,
I don’t want a remote with a touch screen. I want one with a click wheel (which still is touch enabled, by the way). Something that won’t chew batteries.
Can we all get paid to be Apple “analysts” at this point? I feel like a monkey could come up with the new specs of phones and devices from Apple at this point.
