On Tuesday, the first Geekbench benchmarks surfaced for the iPhone 5. Those have been followed by SunSpider Javascript benchmarks which show Apple’s latest iPhone 5 beats everything when it comes to Javascript performance. It’s twice as fast as the iPhone 4S, and significantly snappier than high-end Android handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S III, the HTC One X, and the new LG Optimus G.
In fact, it’s the fastest smartphone SunSpider has ever recorded, scoring 914.7ms. In comparison, the iPhone 4S achieved a score of 2,250ms, while the Galaxy S III got 1442.9ms. Of course, the lower the score, the better the performance. All tests are performed using the handset’s stock (built-in) web browser.
Javascript is used to measure web browser performance, and it can be influenced by a number of factors, including the device’s processor and the Javascript implementation on the device itself. It’s possible that Apple has tweaked iOS 6 to improve Javascript performance, but AnandTech notes that the iPhone 5’s terrific benchmark score is likely thanks to its new 1.02 GHz A6 processor.
