One of the big things missing from Lightroom — Adobe’s excellent photo processing app — was printing. Not boring old printing where you have a big, expensive box in the corner of your office spit out endless sheets of paper until one of them is right. No, we mean remote printing, where you choose some images, hit a button and, a short while later, a gorgeous book appears on your doorstep.
Apple’s iPhoto and Aperture have had this for a while. Now, thanks to Blurb, the brand-new Lightroom 4 has it too.
“Books” is a whole new top-level module which sits up alongside Library, Develop and so on. It’s easy to use: You drag and drop to change the layout, and you can also choose from over 100 templates. Several paper and cover styles are available, and as you select them, the Blurb module estimates the price of the book. As you’d expect of the company behind InDesign, the layout options are legion.
I have a Blurb book, made from my Instagram photos, and it is great — high quality and beautifully printed. I can’t see how — thanks to higher quality photos you’re using — the Lightroom version wouldn’t be even better. And there’s another bonus: your first book gets an automatic 20% discount, and you can also sell copies through the Blurb Marketplace.
