Farmside is a farming simulator that escapes the biggest problem with the genre: nagging in-app purchases. The game is on Apple Arcade which doesn’t allow games to pester players for money.

Plant then harvest crops, raise animals and more in the new title that’s playable on a variety of Apple devices, including iPhone and Mac.

Play Farmside without being nagged off the land

Farming simulators are a popular type of game but they are notoriously loaded down with requests for in-app purchases. These games are typically “free,” which means their developers make money by selling items to players. The constant requests for cash can be irritating, and unethical developers create games that require players to buy items in order to keep playing.

But Farmside is completely free of in-app purchases. Players can enjoy building a little farm without paying anything extra. It’s part of Apple Arcade which means a $4.99-per-month subscription is necessary, but there’ll be no surprise costs. That should reassure parents worried about their children running up a nasty bill playing the game.

Start farming

Farmside players start with a quaint farm by the beach, then plant their crops. They can put in fruit orchards too. And raise chickens, cows, and other animals that produce agricultural products.

This is a working farm, so players need to fill orders from townsfolk. The produce from crops, orchards and animals can also be crafted and cooked in unique recipes.

Farmside offers plenty of customization options. Players can change the color their barn, house and other key farm locations with decals, and customize and dress their avatar.

Everything on the farm can be placed freely, and additions all have their own characteristics, such as fences that stop chickens from running around, street lights that automatically light up at night, and pavement that provides safe walkway for the player’s avatar.

Head down to the farm

Farmside debuted Friday on Apple Arcade. It’s playable on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. External game controllers are an option for any of the supported platforms.

It’s from The Label, which also offers a couple more titles in Apple’s gaming service. There’s the silly golf simulator What the Golf? plus the creepy The Otherside.

Other recent additions to Apple Arcade include extreme hydrojet racing in Riptide GP: Renegade+, the destructive fun of Castle Crumble, and Squiggle Drop.
