A good crime story is hard to resist, and it looks like Apple TV+ has one. A new series and companion podcast called The Big Conn will tell the larger-than-life tale of a Kentucky attorney’s exploits. He defrauded the U.S. government out of $500 billion — the biggest Social Security scam in history.

Apple TV+ premieres the series’ first two episodes at the SXSW Film Festival in March. All four episodes and the podcast launch on May 5 on Apple TV+ and Apple Podcasts, respectively.

The Big Conn tells the story of former eastern Kentucky lawyer Eric C. Conn. He infamously defrauded the government out of more than half a billion dollars in the largest-known Social Security scam ever.

The companion podcast on Apple Podcasts, featuring exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes details, delves into Conn’s outrageous lifestyle.

The Big Conn joins Apple’s growing slate of documentary series and films, including The Velvet Underground, Beastie Boys Story, and Boys State.

Other Apple TV+ fare set to premiere at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival (March 11 – 19) include the movie Cha Cha Real Smooth and three other TV series.

Cha Cha Real Smooth stars Dakota Johnson. Cooper Raiff directs. The film won a Sundance Film Festival Audience Award. As Apple TV+ describes it:

Fresh out of college and without a clear life path going forward, 22-year-old Andrew is stuck back at home with his family in New Jersey. But if there’s one thing that belongs on his nonexistent resume, it’s how to get a party started, which lands him the perfect job of motivational dancing at the bar and bat mitzvahs for his younger brother’s classmates. When Andrew befriends a local mom, Domino, and her daughter, Lola, he finally discovers a future he wants — even if it might not be his own.

In addition to The Big Conn and Cha Cha Real Smooth, Apple SXSW debuts include the WeWork-based limited series WeCrashed, the Earvin “Magic” Johnson documentary They Call Me Magic and the metaphysical psycho-drama Shining Girls.

In 2020, Apple pulled its plans to premiere several original shows at SXSW because of the pandemic. SXSW, later called off, was held in a virtual format in 2021. March 2022 marks its return with in-person audiences.

To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have received more than 200 award wins and 900 nominations.

Apple TV+ is available by subscription for $4.99 per month with a 7-day free trial period.
