A new documentary series based on NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson was Friday confirmed for Apple TV+.

It will be split into four parts that “explore the remarkable accomplishments and global impact of Johnson’s life, both on and off the court,” Apple said. It doesn’t have a release date just yet.

Magic Johnson gets Apple TV+ docuseries

Johnson became a household name during the 13 seasons he played for the Los Angeles Lakers, throughout which he picked up five championships, three NBA Most Valuable Player awards, and nine NBA Finals appearances.

Johnson was forced into retirement after contracting HIV in 1991, thought he did make a couple of comebacks — in 1992 and again in 1996 — before he retired for the third and final time after playing 32 games for the Lakers in 1996.

That same year, Johnson was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. His achievements, as well as his life off the court, make Johnson an ideal subject for what could be a thrilling documentary.

No release date yet

“Featuring never-before-seen footage and interviews with Magic, powerhouses from business and politics, and those in his inner circle, the series will offer an unprecedented look at one of sport’s all-time greats,” Apple said.

The docuseries is being produced for Apple by New Slate Ventures and XTR Production. It doesn’t yet have an official release date.

Apple will no doubt be hoping the series will have a similar impact as the wildly successful and critically acclaimed Netflix documentary The Last Dance, which is based on rival NBA star Michael Jordon.
