For the second year in a row, Apple TV+ kids’ shows Helpsters and Ghostwriter have racked up a slew of Daytime Emmy award nominations. While not quite the collective 13 nominations the two shows received last year (of which Ghostwriter wound up winning one), they nonetheless picked up an impressive six noms between them.

Ghostwriter now in its second season — received five nominations, including outstanding sound mixing and editing, lighting direction, music direction and composition, art direction, and hairstyling. Helpsters — also having finished season two — picked up a nomination for outstanding costume design.

These were the only Apple TV+ shows to receive nominations. Last year, Snoopy in Space and Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10 also picked up some awards. (And, in the case of Peanuts in Space, a win).

Daytime vs. primetime

Daytime Emmy awards are supposed to recognize excellence in American daytime television programming, unlike the regular Emmys which are for primetime programming. Of course, in the world of streaming there’s no such thing as primetime or daytime. That makes the distinction a bit confusing.

In essence, somewhat messily, both camps just go for the shows that feel like they would have belonged there in the pre-digital era. That means that, despite the fact you could watch The Morning Show in, well, the morning, it’s nonetheless not covered by the Daytime Emmys.

Apple has reportedly made winning awards a big part of its Apple TV+ strategy. Particularly with the likes of its “primetime” show like the multi-award-winning Ted Lasso, it’s been very successful at that goal. But it’s important not to forget about Apple’s success in the “daytime” category as well.

The 2021 Daytime Emmy award winners are set to be announced on Friday, June 25. The show will be streamed on Paramount+ and the CBS channel.
