The next-gen Apple Watch could get a huge makeover, with a new, flat-edged design and a green option reminiscent of the AirPods Max.

The redesign would bring Apple Watch into line with the flatter design language and form factor of current-gen Apple products including the iPhone 12, iPad Pro and iPad Air. Apple tipster Jon Prosser revealed the info about the upcoming wearable, likely to be marketed as Apple Watch Series 7, on an episode of his Genius Bar podcast with Sam Kohl.

Update: Prosser released several renders of Apple Watch Series 7 based on the information leaked to him during the latest episode of his Front Page Tech YouTube show. The renders were created by Ian Zelbo.

The new Apple design language

It’s not unusual for Apple to apply its design language across different products. Typically this follows a predictable cycle: Apple debuts a new design aesthetic on one of its leading products, which in recent times has been the iPhone. Then that look and feel filters out to other Apple product lines in the following years.

During such a rollout, a certain disharmony exists in the design of the company’s different product lines. Eventually, everything become unified, with a similar aesthetic applied across all products. Then the iPhone will get another redesign and the cycle starts over again.

A ‘subtle’ Apple Watch series 7 redesign

Because form should follow function, and an Apple Watch doesn’t work the same way or have the same affordances as, say, an iPad, this isn’t an exact science. For instance, sharp edges on a larger screen prove less noticeable and, potentially, less intrusive than they would be on an Apple Watch. For that reason, Prosser suggests the Apple Watch Series 7 redesign will be “more subtle” than some other products.

Prosser isn’t the first person to say this year’s Apple Watch is in line for a redesign. Seasoned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities previously said the 2021 Apple Watch will feature a “significant form factor design change.”
