At least in some ways, TikTok has had a blinder of a year in 2020 — being one of, if not the, the most consistently popular app in the App Store on a monthly basis, as well as enjoying the best single quarter of any app ever.

According to app analytics platform Sensor Tower, it’s picked up another record, too: That of the top 10 most downloaded iOS app of the year with the highest percentage of positive reviews. It seems that people really, really like their TikTok.

The Sensor Tower report notes that:

“In our analysis, we looked at reviews left by users on the U.S. App Store this year. As of December 14, TikTok has received more than 278,000 written reviews, approximately 246,000 of which were accompanied by five- and four-star ratings while about 27,000 had one- and two-star ratings. We counted three-star ratings as neutral. Using this methodology, 88 percent of the reviews TikTok saw this year were positive, making it the best rated top app on the U.S. App Store in 2020.”

Second to TikTok was the breakout mobile hit game Among Us! 67% of its almost 57,000 reviews had either four- or five-star ratings. While Disney+ didn’t make the top 10 most popular apps, and therefore didn’t qualify for the list, 58% of its reviews were either four- or five-stars.

A challenging year for TikTok as well

While TikTok has enjoyed a strong year in many ways, it’s also been a pretty challenging 12 months. This was largely due to President Trump’s battle to ban TikTok from the United States. Trump accused the app of security breaches, which could see data shared with the app’s makers in China. Trump threatened to ban TikTok if it was not sold to an American company by September 15. Judges have since shot down some of these orders. During the controversy, TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer resigned after just three months in the job.

TikTok is available to download from the App Store for free. Interestingly, despite its extreme popularity, the app did not make Apple’s list of top apps for 2020.
