Side-by-side images, one taken with an iPhone 11 camera in Night mode, and the other without it, are the stars of a video released by Apple today. These are intended to demonstrate how capable the latest iPhone is at taking low-light pictures.

The description for “iPhone 11 – Night mode” says “Take more natural looking photos in low-light with Night mode on iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.”

Apple recently invited owners of its latest iPhone lineup to share their best iPhone 11 low-light photos. However, if any of these submissions made it into this video, Apple didn’t say so.

More about iPhone 11 Night mode

Night mode, included in all the handsets Apple launched last fall, activates automatically under poor lighting to improve camera performance in situations that smartphones, until recently, typically failed.

It does this by automatically taking long-exposure pictures, then using machine learning to combine everything captured into a better image. Dimly-lit objects are brightened, but brightly-lit ones aren’t over exposed.

Cult of Mac published a how-to guide for taking better low-light pictures with the iPhone 11.
