Academy Award winner Gary Oldman is the latest big-name actor to sign up for an Apple TV+ original series.

Oldman will star in an adaptation of Mick Herron spy novel Slow Horses. The book is the first in the Slough House series, which currently contains six novels and two novellas.

In the books, protagonist Jackson Lamb leads a group of spies who have been exiled due to various mistakes. Slow Horses tells the story of a man who is kidnapped by people who threaten to behead him live on the internet. Goldman will play Jackson Lamb in the Apple TV+ series, which is being written by Will Smith (no, not that one!). Smith previously penned shows including Veep and The Thick of It. More good news: Justified‘s Graham Yost will serve as the Slow Horses showrunner.

A spy series makes a whole lot of sense for Apple TV+. So far, the streaming service impressively managed to cater to just about every genre, from fantasy shows like See to creepy psychological thrillers like the forthcoming Servant.

Add in a British spy series, and Apple has ticked off yet another genre. Even better, this is a show based on a long-running series of books. That means plenty of potential source material should Slow Horses become a hit. There’s no word on when the show will make it to screens. However, based on previous productions by Apple TV+, we should expect this to take about a year.
