A retro nod to the past -- by which I mean the show released last month.

Movie and TV show video game tie-ins still have a pretty poor reputation dating back to the rushed-out titles that proliferated in the 1980s and 90s. Fortunately, Stranger Things hasn’t taken this as part of its meta homage to all things retro.

Instead, it’s had fun with fan service by recreating its Netflix series in the form of surprisingly good, retro-style games. Now developers BonusXP have recreated the third season of the show in a new isometric action game. Welcome to Stranger Things 3: The Game on iOS…

The first Stranger Things game came out in 2017. That game was an RPG title that let you explore locations from the show as Hopper, Nancy and Lucas. The new game is more action-oriented. It’s also slightly more modern in its gameplay, while sticking to an isometric view that would have been at home on the Genesis.

The game landed on consoles last month when the new season debuted. However, now it’s been ported over to iOS as well, letting iPad and iPhone gamers get in on the fun.

Relive the show’s third season

The developers note that the game lets you:

“Play through familiar events from the series while also uncovering never-before-seen quests, character interactions, and secrets! This adventure game blends a distinctively retro art style with modern gameplay mechanics to deliver nostalgic fun with a fresh new twist.

Just like in the show, teamwork is at the heart of Stranger Things 3: The Game. Fans can team up in two player local co-op to explore the world of Hawkins, solve puzzles, and battle the emerging evils of The Upside Down as one of twelve beloved characters from the show.”

Arguably, Stranger Things has had its moment in the pop culture sun and is now on the decline. Certainly, the last season didn’t create quite the buzz of its predecessors. Nonetheless, if you’re a fan this is probably a worthwhile download to check out over the weekend. (Fans may also want to check out the recent collaboration with Fortnite.)

Stranger Things 3 will run on any iOS device running iOS 11 and above. It costs $4.99 and can be downloaded here.
