Samsung Is Now Shamelessly Ripping Off The Design Of The 4+ Year Old iPhone 3G [Photo]

Over the course of the past year, Samsung has shamelessly stolen Apple’s design on everything from the iPod touch, the iPad 2 Smart Cover, iOS’s homescreen, and more. Heck, they’ve even poached the actresses who star in Apple’s current iPhone 4S commercial!

Having apparently run out of new Apple products to rip-off, Samsung has decided to examine Apple’s past portfolio of devices for new designs to flagrantly plagiarize. The latest? Meet the Galaxy Ace Plus, Samsung’s new entry-level Android phone that looks just like the three year old iPhone 3G design!

This is just beyond parody at this point. Next up? Samsung announces the Galaxy Tab 8.5 Noir, which shamelessly violates the design of the 1993 Apple Newton.

  • Matthew Lammers

What’s the expression about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery?  Too bad intellectual property rules don’t see it that way…  :)

  • Guest

Get over apple, as of now the game is over. Samsung is far ahead of you so stop playing jerk copying story. 4S is not matching Galaxy note, Galaxy Nexus and SII. People know

  • Honey Badger

Uhmm, are we supposed to be surprised by this news? More of the same.

  • Tim Meesseman

    WTF did I just read?

  • IamEzio

Didn’t you know ?the IQ of an Fandroid it less than 10 , they can’t even get to the right site ..

  • FriarNurgle

Is that really the size or was it shopped to match the dimensions of the iPhone 3G?

    Regardless, it’s similarities are unmistakable.

  • recyclops117

Your just another victim to false advertising. You think your galaxy phones have ‘LTE’ when in reality it jas the same mb/s as the 4S and the 4S beats most galaxy phones at browser speeds. Just beacause galaxy phones have more ghz doesnt mean its faster android os is not effeicent. The only thing galaxy phones have is a bogger screen but there resolution dont even come close to that of the 4 and 4S

  • Fitz

Speaking of IQ…it’s “than,” not “then.”

  • David Harrison

Whilst there is a point to your argument, and they are very similar (though there is no comment on the dimensions), it is a rather biased article, possibly to the extent of offence.

  • John Lehmkuhl

You are on the wrong site, loser.

  • TOto Nortonantiwazgha’

    Like iphone 5 ! Heins ? hihi

  • Randal Frye

OMG! it looks like every other smartphone!  the audacity.  I’m sick of this debate.  “it has icons and look, their button is in the same place as the iphone.”  seriously?  let the courts decide this stupidity, and buy the phone you like damn it!

  • Dave Greene

COM has a lot of good stuff but more and more articles, like this one, are just ridiculous.

  • SalvadorRudy

    The guy wrote “Than”…

  • Figurative

Hah.  And please tell us how many new and currrent Samsung Android devices won’t even be able to update to the latest version of Android.  People know how effed up Android is.

  • Haewon Lee

Of course, there is no 100% proof of this kind of argument,
But it is sure that samsung has followed the pattern of apple
in product line and in design,
in contrast to the other companies like HTC, motorola,..
This behavior is not of a leader, but of a follower.
Samsung is well-known as a fast follower.

  • TylerHoj

Look at the HP touchpad, that had iPhone 3G[S] written all over it. Those two products literally look as if they had the same designer. It’s not just Samsung. Although Samsung is a little more shameless in their efforts of ripping off any and everything Apple. From pictures of Apple apps in their own store displays, to the way their products are advertised, it’s as if the creative team at Samsung are all Apple fanboys. Although I highly doubt they’re doing all of this on purpose. Let’s be real, employees of Samsung aren’t sitting in their labs saying, “How can we rip off Apple next?” That ‘concept’ smells to badly of pending lawsuit.

  • fforblack

Yawn, Samsung copies Apple…this isn’t news anymore…lol…its been happening since the first galaxy…hell, I’m in Nigeria and I see galaxy tab ads with iOS icons flying out of the screen…definitely coincidental…

  • SevanGrim

9 times out of ten the ridiculousness comes from Brownlee.

  • SevanGrim

…just wondering, exactly ho many different ways are there to make a phone? I mean, they cant be too big or too small. They cant have certain designs as people have been shown to hate them. They cant have too many or too few buttons.
perhaps its not copying, so much as what people want. I mean, it seems everyone wants every non-apple company to go out of business because their tripping over themselves to make a phone thats NOT like apples, instead of making a phone that people would like.
    just a thought.

  • iDaBoss

    ditto

  • iDaBoss

LTE dramatically outperforms 3g and hspa+ in speed, regardless of brand. I agree with your other points.

  • iDaBoss

    maybe he edited it

  • recyclops117

Most att galaxy smartphones are 14 mb/s like the 4S

  • iDaBoss

Yes, speeds a lot depending on carrier, location, and device, but LTE overall is a better radio technology than 3g. In the next year or two, as LTE rollout progresses and the next gen of LTE radios are released, 4g phones will see more consistent improvement. I’m just pointing out that it would be erroneous to dismiss LTE simply because it is in it’s early stages.

  • recyclops117

    Yeah I agree

  • Edward Marquez

There are many ways to make a phone, including the size of the screen, color, bezel, and arrangements in buttons both on soft touch and physical. But this link may help too: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/09/28

  • AppleKilledMobileFlash

What do you mean that smartphones can’t be too big or too small?  I guess you haven’t seen those gorilla-mitt sized Android smartphones.  They can almost be mistaken for small tablets, they’re so freaking big.  The next thing you know, the Droidtards will be holding Kindle Fire sized-smartphones up to their pointed little heads.  Hell, I could easily design a smartphone that doesn’t look close to how any iPhone looked and it would still be comfortable to hold.  These Maryland Farmers from Samsung honestly don’t spend any of their time with design.  They just copy the shape of whatever the top-selling Apple product looks like.

Nokia smartphones are attractive and they look nothing like iPhones.  Neither do BlackBerrys.  I don’t blame Samsung, but their smartphone division is honestly made up of a bunch of Apple-cloning dicks.  They could have at least used a black chrome bezel.  Whatever.  It’s not an exact copy, just very, very similar in shape and color.  They could have at least changed the color.

  • JonGarrett

this story is a complete failure. how is this “shamelessly copying the iPhone 3G” and how does Samsung benefit from an almost 3year old design?

right off the bat I see clear and obvious differences.

    1. Its larger
    2. it has flash
    3. it has a speaker on the back
    4. camera is in center
    5. says Samsung on back

    6. No buttons on top
    7. HAS button on the right side
    8. light sensor on the front face
    9. longer speaker grill
    10. square home button

also has a less pronounced curve AND looks like Samsung’s F700 !! you know, the phone that was released almost 6 months before the first iPhone.

This site has a reputation much better than some apple fan sites so Im really surprised to see you guys stoop so low for a story.

  • JonGarrett

very immature response. probably no more than 19yrs old and girlfriend-less.

  • Hsn11

The reason it’s being compared is because Samsung has a history of copying many apple designs and it doesn’t seem like they want to stop…IPhones aren’t the only way to design, other phones look different and iPhones weren’t accused of copying other phones, in fact you answered yourself “it’s what people want” that’s why Samsung is copying.

  • dale2000

“This site has a reputation much better than some apple fan sites so Im really surprised to see you guys stoop so low for a story.”

Oh come on… no they don’t.  They do this stuff on purpose.  You know that the people who write for this ‘blog’ also write for cultofandroid.com, right?  Like… EXACTLY the same people.

  • Dave Greene

Agreed. I really think Brownlee’s job is to trash a non-Apple company every day, no matter how dumb the argument might appear. There’s good stuff on this blog (that’s why I continue to follow it), but very little of it is from him.

  • techgeek01

Is it worth mentioning that It looks like the Samsung F700, that came like several months before the original iPhone?  (Probably not, because then you can’t go around claiming that Samsung is ripping off Apple then)

  • Leiryv

sorry but F700 is first seen on feb 2007, a month after iPhone announcement, said an Android Lover.

CeBit 2006? fake news dude, it was CeBit 2007

  • Leiryv

Samsung F700 came after iPhone, not before.

  • techgeek01

Samsung has a history of copying many apple designs.  Maybe it’s worth mentioning that Samsung Had a phone BEFORE the iPhone that “looked like an iPhone”.  Meaning that the Galaxy line up of phones is really a more advance version of that phone.  Also, Samsung had devices that LOOKED like the iPad before the iPad.  meaning that the Galaxy Tab’s copied off that.

It’s simple to say now that Samsung is copying of Apple.  But once you start digging, you begin to see that Samsung had SIMILAR looking devices BEFORE Apple came to the market with theirs.

  • JonGarrett

And you’re saying what? in less than 30 days samsung designed and shipped an entirely new phone?

please grow up, neither Apple nor Samsung gives a FK about you.

  • Leiryv

I’m saying that your comment about F700 is invalid.

No they dont give a fk, but it seems you did.

  • henstudio

i guess they really pissed off with Apple, that’s why making this joke…

  • Hsn11

Similarly samsung did not make the first tv or whatever else they make, the main point is they’re copying everything the successful one has done, successful one being apple

  • aik•wae

John Brownlee = typical phatetic blind fan boys who use “sunglass of horse” which only can pointed his eyes straight foward haha, cant turn left nor right

  • CathalGarrad

Samsung are using legal battles to waste apples time and to distract them. A Samsungs lawyer could not even tell the product he represents in a courtroom from the iPad. Samsung don’t care though as the use useless lawyers to tie up apples time and it cost them very little.

Samsung also get huge column inches for their products and there is a perception of Apple as a legal monster which the public are starting to dislike.

Apple should bring out new designs more than every two years for their flagship product and it would solve everything.

  • Al

Wow. In another one of your replies you said to someone: “please grow up, neither Apple nor Samsung gives a FK about you.” How immature is that? “probably no more than 19yrs old and girlfriend-less” I think it is very clear who is being immature. Yikes. No doubt any reply to this will be much the same.

  • oomu

their design was tremendously like apple’s one AFTER apple sold them.

it’s not about if samsung made flat pocket computers before apple.

  • LelandHendrix

Wow. I can’t decipher what is worse: your English or your point!

  • slackguy

What perception is this? Your own? Great. Samesung are beyond a joke now and I hope they lose big time in the upcoming trials. Meanwhile, Apple will continue with record-breaking quarters despite your ‘public’ perception…

  • slackguy

This article is accurate, so I have no idea why you’re bagging the author on it. Samsung fan?

  • slackguy

I find Samsung’s blatant thievery to be offensive.

  • Guest

Except it doesn’t look like every other smartphone at all – it only looks like the 3GS.

  • slackguy

LTE also dramatically uses up all of your battery in under an hour.

  • David Liu

Saw one of these phones at the store yesterday. Had to do a double-take to make sure it wasn’t an iPhone 3G. Shameful. You’re quibbling over the tiny ass small stuff. No one cares when the big picture still looks similar enough to be confused by it.

  • David Liu

  • kyleh613

You’re really gripping at straws on this one, saying that the phones look the same. They really do not, at all.

  • JonGarrett

only an iDiot would be confused by it or think it an iPhone. everything looks like an iPhone even a slice of toast.

  • snookasnoo

Actually it costs them a lot in $$$ and public perception.  More importantly they have lsot millions or more $$$ in Apple business.  its a huge hurt for Samsung.

    This is obvious btw.

  • snookasnoo

    That made no sense.

  • snookasnoo

No its not worth mentioning because the F700 does not like like the 3GS and your timeline is wrong.  Next.

  • snookasnoo

The mind boggles how you got the timelines wrong and can look at these devices and conjure up your rather strange viewpoint of what looks like the other.

  • snookasnoo

    Not just Apple design.

  • Thomas Scrace

I think my favourite two were:

    “5. says Samsung on back”

    and

    “10. square home button”

    Brilliant stuff.

  • hisshadow

It has Flash? This matters to a claim about the clear copying of the design elements?
     STFU.

  • Jonathan Baldwin

Seriously? They’re near identical. Hide the screen and only Apple/Android fans would tell them apart. Even without hiding the screen, I doubt many non experts would know the difference.

  • Jonathan Baldwin

It was the English. There is no point.

  • Jonathan Baldwin

Can I have a ride in your time machine when you’ve finished with it cos I’ve got some history I’d like to change too.

  • Q.B. Fox, Esq.

I know, right? The iPhone has an Apple logo on it and the Samsung phone says “Samsung.” Worlds apart!

  • lolBus

Are you blind or just looking at different phones?

  • jonathanjk

‘Samesung’ this is brilliant. There’s always creativity by the internet for modifying a company’s name. I didn’t expect this. I’m getting weird looks explaining this to be room mate.

Best laugh I’ve had this year.

  • CathalGarrad

    Business with samsung is up,

The South Korean conglomerate supplied Apple with about $5.7bn in components last year, some 4% of Samsung’s total sales. Apple’s portion grew to 5.8% of Samsung’s sales in the first quarter, driven by booming sales of iPads and iPhones, for which Samsung supplies chips, along with Japan’s Toshiba.

    Also as regards perception…

“These legal battles are raising perception among consumers that Samsung is the only one capable of competing against Apple,” said Choi Do-youn, an analyst at LIG Investment & Securities.

  • Spencer

    Those phones look the same!

  • jonathanjk

Seriously there are a billion ways to design a phone. Speak to any first year degree designer.

I never get confused by which car I’m looking at and for the most part they need to function with 4 wheels and 4-5 doors. I would argue they are more constrained design wise but there’s no confusion in the market when it comes to look and branding.

  • lolBus

You know it’s different because you know what you’re looking at. The vast majority of phone buyers out there do NOT know the difference, Samsung’s own lawyers don’t even know the difference between the two competitors tablets. Stop looking at it from your fanboy point of view and see it from the general consumer view, that is what matters.

  • lolBus

    — “…just wondering, exactly ho many different ways are there to make a phone? I mean, they cant be too big or too small.”
Other companies do just fine at coming up with original designs that don’t look like Apple product ripoffs.

  • SunFlyShoo

It costs huge $$ to design each product, and even more to bring each product to market. The difference is a huge price advantage for Apple.  As far as perception, I was likely to purchase a new Samsung TV, now Samsung and Sony are the two brands I refuse to purchase.

  • MPercentTwentyM

No, I figured it out. It just took some extra-careful reading. He was trying to make a reference to a horse with blinkers on, he just didn’t know what they were called in English. Sort of a generic insult, but certainly applicable.

  • lolBus

    Here are the dimensions:

    Galaxy Ace Plus: 114.5 x 62.5 x 11.2mm
    iPhone 3Gs: 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm

  • eyhk

“…and how does Samsung benefit from an almost 3year old design?”Actually 4+ years since the iPhone 3G was basically the same as the 3GS and to answer your question, this product is aimed at the low-end market, exactly where Apple has now positioned the iPhone 3GS.

And the rest of your points:

    1. 3.5″ vs 3.65″2. It has “a” flash or “Flash” as in Adobe Flash? Either way, product design and confusion isn’t made because it has flash(sic) or not. It is the overall feeling, the silhouette/shape, the materials, the color choices, that make a copy.
    3. See 2
    4. See 2
    5. It might as well say iPhone.
    6. See 2
    7. See 6
    8. Same as the iPhone, not a difference
    9. How much longer?
    10. Single rounded square button in the center, not the usual Android 4 button convention (that is being changed to be more iPhone-like I know)

How about the same black face behind a screen with equally spaced top and bottom bezel? The rounded rectangular shape with curved black back?(See HTC for unique rectangular phones that do no copy the iPhone) The chrome that surrounds the edge?

Yes, you may say that twin(monozygotic) A and twin B have their differences. But to say that they do not look similar is too far fetched.

I am Korean and even I am ashamed at the complete lack of dignity and self-respect at Samsung.

  • eyhk

    you mad bro?

  • Iconoclysm

Only an idiot would miss this kind of design ripoff…

  • Iconoclysm

But it would not be erroneous to ignore current LTE phones.

  • Iconoclysm

I would imagine it’s the executives wondering how to rip off Apple next…and I bet the designers would know how to please those executives.

  • Iconoclysm

This is nonsense, Samsung’s designs did not look similar before Apple came to market.

  • wockrassa

…you know, if they actually cloned a Newton, and if it had HWR, I might actually consider buying it.

  • SilverPanda

By saying that F700 shipped six months prior to the unveiling of the iPhone you were close to implying that Apple could have ripped off Samsung’s design.
Now you realise you were wrong and as a defense mechanism, you go for the classic personal argument: “grow up, no one cares about your opinion” – what are you going to say next? “You live in your mom’s basement”??

  • Iconoclysm

Interestingly enough, the first iPhone was revealed to the public a month before Samsung’s F700..and iPhone launched 5 months before the F700…

Maybe you’ll want to read this http://androidcommunity.com/wh… then possibly wisen up a little.

  • SilverPanda

And you can’t turn it off, unless you’re geeky enough to go to the Market and get some app that can turn LTE off. Newsflash – most people aren’t geeky enough and just want a phone that can be fast while browsing and battery-saving while idle.
The worse is that LTE consumes so much battery that even when plugged to the car plug, it still drains battery and doesn’t compensate. Someone on a blog said that a Galaxy Nexus doesn’t hold FOUR HOURS while PLUGGED ON THE CAR.

  • SilverPanda

Although I usually loathe Brownlee’s “articles”, I think I hate your English even more.
Learn it and then start writing comments. “Sunglass of horse”.

  • CathalGarrad

Not my perception, see above, as for record quarters see:

    http://articles.businessinside…

Missed last quarter by 5 million iPhones.

  • iDaBoss

The OP was saying current LTE phones are false advertising with no speed benefits. I was was simply pointing out the inaccuracy in this.

  • CathalGarrad

    Your in the minority though,

    http://www.reuters.com/article…

    record sales….

  • kyleh613

lmao, what? List of differences I noticed: On the front, there is the Samgsun logo, no Apple logos on the front of the iphone, the front button is a different shape and design on both, and on the back, the cameras are different shapes, designs and in different positions. If you were to hide the logo’s, I would still be able to easily tell you which phone was which. Not to mention the completely different operating systems.

In to response to “am I blind or just looking at different phones?” Well no shit! Of course i’m looking at different phones!

    Fucking-a, you guys are retards.

  • kyleh613

Since my previous first post was censored, because the fanboys don’t like what I had to say; There is little to no difference between the two phones. And even if there is, this is hardly new or a SHOCKING BEYOND BELIEF revelation. Virtually all of the smartphones out there have started to blur the line. They all look very similar. There is only so much you can do with hardware of this size, and stay original and unique in your design.

  • lolBus

All the differences you list are minor. The test is to ask a general consumer if they can spot the difference because that’s where it matters, not whether a Samsung fanboy (like yourself) or an Apple fanboy can tell the difference. This test has been performed already in court, Samsung’s own lawyers couldn’t tell the difference between Samsung’s tablet and Apple’s iPad.

If you truly think these phones are absolutely nothing alike then you are clearly a blind fanboy.

  • Abhi Beckert

That just isn’t true! Almost every phone company in the world is doing a perfectly good job of designing 3 to 5 inch touchscreen phones with little or no buttons that still look perfectly unique. Go look at the recent phones from HTC and Nokia. They look nothing like the iPhone, but have near identical physical dimensions and features.

Design patents/trade dress laws explicitly allow copying functional things (such as screen size), but they do prevent cosmetic copying. Samsung is doing the latter with device after device, and it’s even more blatant when you look at the accessories and packaging of the devices.

  • Epleguy

Ok, that’s it. Sue the bastards.

  • jsex

    blinders

  • MPercentTwentyM

I’ve heard it both ways, but yeah.

  • colormedisappointed

These pictures have been manipulated to make the two phones look like they are the same size. Everyone knows that the Samsung phones have much larger screens that those from Apple.

  • John Drefahl

i stand corrected.. Samsung did knock off Apples top design (er only design) and used it for a crappy midlevel phone. Congrats.. you win. :) I guess. I don’t even understand how 1 button works with android anyways.. nor do I want to even begin to try and figure it out.

  • brent bacheller

its a good thing apple doesn’t steal all their designs…….

  • Damon Barnett

cool story bro.  “Samesung” isn’t being sued by apple to waste their time.   There is huge dollars at stake and already injunctions have taken place.  There only perception regarding samesung is that they have a lack of innovation as a company culture and that they are blatantly ripping off apple to compensate.

  • CathalGarrad

Yeah but the huge dollars are going into apples pocket at the moment so they are the ones with the most to loose. Samsung are copying apple, thats a given but even with copying they are the number one smart phone producer, soon to be number one feature phone producer (from nokia) number one TV producer and you can be guaranteed their ultra books will sell like mad. iTv will be copied instantly as well.

Most desktops look the same, most laptops look the same but a similar phone or tablet becomes a legal issue?????

Why has the air, macbook pro, iTV, iphone 4 & itouch not changed in 24 month from the most design centric company out there? Something is wrong.

iOS has been the same old for 4 years. It’s beyond comprehension.

  • Damon Barnett

complete nonsense.  Apple’s iPhone 4S was the best-selling smartphone at Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint in November. Look it up fandroid. That being said who cares who sells more. Doesn’t change the fact that.

a.) samesung can’t innovate and rips off apple
b.) the iphone is still a better phone than the imposter. for the same money.

  • tazh89

why alter the image to make the device look same size…if they were ”shamelessly” copying you would not have to alter the image cause the device would be the same size right,if they were shamelessly copying it would not have
    1. capacitive buttons and not have a rectangular home button
    2. would not have a camera in the middle with a FLASH
    3. power button would not be on the side
    4. would not have a removable back cover

you clearly are blind fanboy because the apparent rip off smart covers are not even made by samsung yet you in this article STILL claim samsung copied the cover, and seriously the girl actress WOW you really are up apples A**…just cause apple used that actress does that mean from now on whoever uses her as an actress, which is her JOB is copying apple LOL…i bet you believe that android copied ios5 notification, android copied ios folders,wp7 copied iphones access of camera from the lockscreen, rim copied imessage lol i’ll help you out all those appeared way before apple implemented them…
also have you seen tv,s and laptops well guess what A LOT of them look the same yet you dont hear complaining hey look there rectangle tv looks like ours
im not a fanboy i have had an ip4 and may get an ip5 this year if released but i hate these apparent  professionally journalist or whatever you are that write fanboyist article and not use conmen sense…

  • tazh89

they look similar but i could list a ton of other phones that look similar…theres just too many differences to be called a shameless copy when there is 1 physical button and 2 capacitive button, has a flash, camera, power button location, logo on the front etc
a lot of tvs and laptops look similar yet you dont hear or see someone writing an article about that….seriously if an apple tv does come out and is rectangle and sleek looking and very thin like current samsung tvs,are cultof mac going to write an article that apple shamelessly copied samsung, i can guarantee they wouldnt and shouldnt,as customers now expect tvs to be sleek, thin and bE RECTANGULAR, same goes with probably smartphone buyers, they want phones that are sleek, thin and rectangular.

  • Damon Barnett

you need to do some reading if you don’t think this is costing/going to cost samsung a lot of money.  For starters it’s already losing business for them from apple components.    You’re missing the point though who cares if they sell.  All of Samesung’s products are shit.   They are a corporation that has a culture based around zero innovation and their products show it.

“Why has the air, macbook pro, iTV, iphone 4 & itouch not changed in 24 month from the most design centric company out there? Something is wrong.”

The only thing wrong is your lack of information.  once again just complete nonsense.  There has been changes from all of these devices from subtle to huge.  iphone4 hasn’t even been out for 24 months (and it’s still the best design out there even now).  either way apple designs are multiple years ahead of the competition and are the reason the competition even looks the way it does. I.e blackberry before iphone.

“iOS has been the same old for 4 years. It’s beyond comprehension.”

IOS has had many changes from version 1 to 5.  If you find it boring that’s fine (not everyone has good taste) but it’s still a better user experience and more reliable than any other mobile OS out there.  I tried using a nexus S as my main phone (running ICS).  It’s a joke compared to the iphone4/4s.  The G nexus I used for 2 days was nice but too big and still suffered from the shame shit OS and cheap inferior build quality.  Not to mention lol the battery drained at 1 percent per minute with LTE turned on.

  • Damon Barnett

Blah blah blah page clicks blah blah blah

No one with a clue in the tech industry, including fandroid pundits, doesn’t think samesung is ripping off apple.  “consumers” are buying a smartphone they don’t give a shit either way.  They have no clue if samesung is capable of competing with apple.  They do however notice that the phone/tablet on display looks just like an iphone.

  • Damon Barnett

Oh horseshit. I’ve never looked at any other laptop tv or phone and gone wow I can’t tell the difference from 5-10 feet away. But with the galaxy tab I can’t.

it’s not our fault your blind and aren’t able to see that the galaxy tab and the many of samsung’s phones are blatant ripoffs.  But hey man at least you can tell the difference now if only samesung’s lawyers could!

  • tazh89

lol seriously you think people are that stupid, even if they looked exactly the same people would know 1 is a samung and 1 is apple,no one will go and buy this thinking its an apple product…people are not so stupid as you like to think that they dont know the differnces between  a company like samsung.apple, htc, motorolo, nokia etc cause when one purchaces a device am sure they know what companies device they are buying.
thats like saying that when people buy a tv,they might have mistakenly brought a sony tv instead of a lg or any other manufacture tv because it looked similar..i have yet to read about a person to buy a samsung product thinking it was a apple product cause am sure if that person existed then cult of mac would have written about it A LONG TIME AGO

  • unigolyn

Holy shit, and my Logitech keyboard looks just like my wife’s Microsoft keyboard! OUR SCREENS ARE IDENTICAL, too!

  • jay_butler

Except for the fact that this Samsung phone has a 3.65″ screen as opposed to the 3.5″ screen on the iPhone.

  • tazh89

if in contrast htc and moto were not copying like samsung they would not also be being sued…product line?samsung have been making smartphones and have also made a tablet(windows) before apple so how are they copying the product line. design they have taken apples example of keeping everything minimalistic as the customers have shown that is what they want and when things are kept minimalistic they are bound to look similar…if you look at samsung digital photo frames which look like tablets and came out before the ipad,is it possible that samsung are using designs of other older products of theres with there new products.

  • s_mAn25

hahaha. Wow, whoever thinks they look the same seriously needs to get their eyes checked out!
And the image has obviously been altered. Stupid Americans I’m guessing? :P

    iPhone owner.

    Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus is  4.52 x 2.46 x 0.44. iPhone is 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48. So, the difference in size is 0.02 x 0.06 x 0.04. That’s really manipulating an image, isn’t it?

  • CathalGarrad

    Business with samsung is up,

The South Korean conglomerate supplied Apple with about $5.7bn in components last year, some 4% of Samsung’s total sales. Apple’s portion grew to 5.8% of Samsung’s sales in the first quarter, driven by booming sales of iPads and iPhones, for which Samsung supplies chips, along with Japan’s Toshiba.
    As for what they sell,

Internal components reworked and updated, DESIGN all the same from the previous generation. iphone, ipad, air, pro, itouch, itv

Apple make one phone, one. They can only release a new design every 24 months yet they claim design as their core belief?

iPad sales are way down on kindle fire and are going to be slaughtered in the long run against what others will bring to market

app are falling every month as well

iphone 180,000 a day compared to 700,00 android

osx stuck at 9% forever against windows

whatever apple bring its instantly copied from now on

  • Taylor Ling

Exactly what I have thought when I see the preview of Ace Plus. Look exactly the same as 3G/3GS. Samsung, where’s the creativity?

  • Guest

Most of you think 3.5″ iPhone4(s) works out for you well than stay as you are as long as it makes you happy. I am moving on to a Galaxy note 3.1.2012 that’s the upgrading time for me from slow 3G network on my iPhone4S on AT&T. I frankly like to dump at&t over to Verizon as well but because of the note I’ll stay. Oh I have a MacBook pro 2010, an iMac 2009 and an old PowerBook g4 15″ from 2004 now iPhone4 will never buy another product from the apple because of letting supid like this article

  • Guest

On November 2011 Samsung said they no longer cares about apple because they have a new tech that apple will ever dream to cath up so stay tuned! Hope apple even get LTE on iPhone5 without using Samsung’s A5 chip. Can they make iphones without Samsung? maybe but not easily. Apple doesn’t make anything but hey they do design yah, f..n big deal. If they don’t come up a drestically newer stuff on iPhone5 the game is over as I said.

  • Guest

Go to a Best Buy store to check out TV, they all look alike, stop making a childish game on here, how come they even look alike? Except as apple has done photoshop before to make like this, who says shame on to who? By the way who said we shamelessly steal/copy designs from others? Steve jobs, And he did!
    Stupid American = Apple

  • Timothy Su

Samsung only manufactures the A5. There’s a difference.

  • Benjamin Wilkes

They should have gone all the way and put the camera in the corner, made the size identical. At least then the cases and some accessories for the iPhone 3GS would work.

  • giantvagijay

like putting 2 horns on each side?  all smartphones look alike, appletard!

  • Andrew Waters

    Your funny!

  • steffen_jobs

looks like a “slavish” copy to me.

  • Maciej Baron

Guys, the dimensions of the phone are different, this picture is manipulative. Moreover I think the statement “shamelessly ripping off” is ridiculous – many phones look like that.

  • Formul

you mean just because it is few fractions of a mm bigger it is not a ripoff and looks totally different? oh i forgot that the android fanboyism comes with a total blindness

  • James Saldana

Apple owns the intellectual property for the A4, A5, etc.

    Samsung only provides fabrication.

  • Formul

and to your “dimensions of the phone are different”
    samsung: 114.7 x 62.5 x 11.2
    iPhone: 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3
thats every dimension except thickness hasless than 1 mm difference, so the picture is actually accurate – at least get your shit straight before posting your lame comment

  • kurkos_dr

I am a fan of Android (the fiasco with Google Voice being rejected for no reason, the overheating 3GS, the signal dropping iphone 4 and the battery devouring 4S has put me off from even thinking of purchasing an iphone) but i have to admit that what Samsung does with the Galaxy is pure copycat. I wonder why people buy Galaxy phones. At least the Nexus phones, HTC’s phones and LG’s phones have something different in them.

  • subvoice

hi there folks it’s me THE CONSUMER! and I am Legion! we are the ones who actually buy this stuff and you know how we do it? we decide if we want an Android phone (if we do that it will take quite some time because of the myriad of models we can chose from) or an Apple iOS phone (which does not take very long as you can only choose between two models). that’s it folks. nothing more to it. and, we seriously do not care if all the smartphones out there look the same way because there is a distinct feature to keep them apart, it’s called operting system. we consumers know that Apple is easy and carefree and that Android is not that easy and carefree. to think that we consumers are too stupid to get the difference between Apple and everyone else (i.e. Samsung) is an insult! we might not be that tech savvy as you fanbois (Apple or anything else) but we know what we like and that is what we buy. you guys better go and look for a real issue to discus…

  • Formul

customers are not stupid, but they dont care as much as we around the tech blogs do – they are not going to buy android phone because it is android and they will not buy iPhone because it is iOS, its just like a feature phones are – if they like how the phone looks and works, if the price is right they will buy it

they dont have to necessarily confuse this thing with an iPhone, but they will buy it because it looks cool and works in a certain way – and the look is ripped off the iPhone (and how it works as well to certain degree but its not the discussed thing) – and thats the real problem

  • Laurence Morgan

” oh i forgot that the android fanboyism comes with a total blindness”

    Oh the irony.

  • Laurence Morgan

    As is your grammar.

It’s “you are funny”, not “funny belongs to you”.

  • Laurence Morgan

There’s nothing creative about Apple’s design of their capacitive touch-screen devices. All they did was reverse engineer the requirements and released that; which is all that every OEM has done and hence why all tablets and most smart phones look pretty similar.

That said, the Ace Plus does look more “iPhone-esk” than most of Samsung’s offerings. An ugly iPhone at that (and I wasn’t particularly fond of the 3GS’s design to start with)

  • Domdym

Lol isnt the 4s the biggest design rip off anyone has ever seen? Its a carbon copy of the 4 but with more crap stuffed in there. I just wish apple would suck it up and copy android on the widgets and gorilla glass. And screen size. heck just stick the iphone 4s guts in the galaxy nexus and I will buy it.

  • Domdym

Smart to use design q’s from the 3gs and not the 4/4s. I liked the design of the 3gs better. Why double the amount of incredibly breakable glass? Why you ask?
    Because it looks amazing! Not.

  • Domdym

My friend dropped his iphone 4s out of his pocket the other day and shattered the screen. Although they will fix it for him now he had an otterbox brick case for it lol. Fail

  • Domdym

Don’t get me wrong.I’m disgusted wroth how poor the hardware in androids phones is currently. Even there flagship model is using an old gpu lol.
So to put it into perspective I am sickened by android and iphone and windows phone… Pretty much every thing out there is crap accept transformer prime. And that’s even got a poor gps lol. Granted the gps is an extra perk. I still wish out worked right all the time.

  • Domdym

P.s. I agree with subvoice. Get over the similarities and focus on the differences. Like this phone is nothing like the 3gs its more like a small version of a galaxy s2

  • Formul

yeah then every single samsung TV and display are a ripoff of the first cheesy piano black one they did :D

  • Kurt Vachon

Thats nice. Have you heard of the thing called “lawyers” they are another group of people. A group of people who see things like this and understand the bullshit they are witness to.

  • Carl Anders Düvel

This is total bullshit. People either want an Iphone or they don’t want one. They don’t buy a Samsung device just because it looks similar or they have the same ladies in the adds.
    Remember:

  • Carter Shanklin

Boo hoo, it’s a rectangle, nobody should be allowed to make rectangular phones apple patented the rectangle, waaaa waaaaa waaaaaa

  • otikik

They only emulate external design (unfortunately). The user experience is 100% Samsung – as in, much worse than any Apple product.

My Samsung Galaxy S lags so much that I can’t turn off the wake up alarm in the morning (it requires a slide that is “too much for it to handle” somehow). When my girlfriend asked me what phone should she get, I told her “iPhone” right away.

  • kurkos_dr

“it’s a rectangle, nobody should be allowed to make rectangular phones apple patented the rectangle, waaaa waaaaa waaaaaa”

It also has one button under the screen that is remarkably the size of the iphone button and not the 4 (3, at least) androids should have, it has the same back and it has the same silver ring around the phone, and… it’s a rip off in general. Here is a bonus pic http://tinyurl.com/7be24b7

Get lost open source freetard, you don’t have to defend everything Android OEMs do, just because Google thows you a bone by releasing *some* of the Android source code after they have launched it in their devices. Samsung is mangling Android with their rip-offs, end of story.

  • SaberUK

Don’t be silly. Lawyers aren’t people!

  • andre1hendrik

@Domdyn Uhm … I don’t see how Apple can rip off Apple. Thats like saying BMW ripped off BMW because this year’s 325 looks like last year’s 325 …

  • spacespeed

Back looks completely different. Also, explain the design of the Galaxy Nexus, then.

As for Android phone lag, unless you have certain Motorola phones, get it rooted and install a custom rom. Doesn’t take very long, and makes the phone quite a bit better if it has too much factory bloatware.

  • Alex Mirabelli

    camera is on center
    screen is wider
central button is a real button
    side shape is different…
isn’t samsung producing components for apple…???????
Apple should start to think about producing iphone only in usa…
Olivetti invented the first pc … but their american labs where near apple ones…
playstation was born from  nintendo letting sony work on snes successor…
xbox was bor from sega letting ms access  dreamcast hardware and joypad..
If apple choose to make iphones with samsung then they cannot cry for this…
they should be made in usa not made in korea…LOL…

Wrong, it does look like every other smart phone, rectangular with icons.

  • airmanchairman

You give the public too much credit for common sense, which as we well know is not common at all.
Not for nothing does Samsung make sure its products are located right beside their Apple counterparts in stores that stock all devices.

It’s because they know that “the Mother of Fools is forever pregnant” – Italian Serie A club owner.

Why us a a manipulated photo?
Why are all the Apple fanboys out to get Samsung?
Maybe it’s time for a reality check.
1: Steve Jobs (RIP) was open about that they steal what they come across.
2: Apple as a brand was The Beatles’s record label, Apple began to use without permission.
3: The design on the iPhone is the same design Samsung had on their picture frames long before the first smartphones came with this design.
4: The first smart phone that came with this design is the LG Prada

I laugh myself to death of the miserable journalism in Cult Of Mac. Just look at this:
     – Source: CultofMac (a pure Apple fan site)  – IPhone 3G is 1 cm longer than the Galaxy Ace Plus – the picture in the article is so obviously manipulated – Galaxy Ace Plus flat has short sides, while iPhone 3G has “sharp” sides with curved back – Galaxy Ace Plus has a flat back, while iPhone 3G has rounded rear – There is a large apple (!) On the back of the iPhone 3G – The back of the iPhone 3G is white, while it is black on Galaxy Ace Plus is black
Stevie Wonder had done better research than Cult Of Mac.

  • Rune Skarbom

Even the brand Apple is stolen. Steve Jobs quote: Good artists copy great artists steal

  • Rune Skarbom

Of course they does for an Apple fanboy that is looking at a manipulated picture

Beats most galaxy phones at browser speed ? Most ? Explain that one. By the way, change browser. Problem solved

  • Rune Skarbom

Have you ever tried to turn off an Apple product during a sw/iOS hang ?

What is the similarity between Apple fanboys and religious sects? They are all brainwashed to believe that all other beliefs are wrong.

you said “It is the overall feeling, the silhouette/shape, the materials, the color choices, that make a copy.”

silhouette/shape?  are you serious? I cant even begin to name all the phones that have had this shape way before the iPhone

    materials? WTF plastic and glass?!?!?

the color? its Black for Pete’s sake !! do you honestly believe that any pone that’s black, made of plastic and glass and is rectangular in shape is a copy of an iPhone? phones have had those attributes since the 90’s !!

  • JonGarrett

more people are confused by cars than by phones.  Toyota Camry vs Lexus, Firebird vs Camaro, etc. etc.  hundreds of models of vans, trucks and SUVs that look like each other.

  • JonGarrett

Im talking about the Camera Flash on the back so you STFU asshole.

  • John Brown

I guess if you’re a dumbass reductionist it is “just a rectangle”. Face it, that shit looks exactly like the iPhone 3G. You’ll have better luck projecting your tears to people who are blind.

The iPhone has a flash you idiot.

  • kevinkee

It’s all about everyone’s perception nowadays, but Apple is doing just fine. If what you stated above were impacting Apple negatively, yet they are the most valuable company in the world for a while now. How could that be with app falling every month, less sales compare to Androids, OS stuck at lower percentage against Windows? Because their business model is totally different! They don’t need to win quantity, they just emphasise in quality, and with that comes with people willingness to pay high Dollar. Androids is free, Kindle Fire is cheap, Samsung is everywhere – let them be, because Apple has its own Business model.

  • ryankearney

It’s funny, because Steve Jobs once said:

“And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas”

Why isn’t Samsung allowed to do the same?

No one would actually confuse this with an iPhone. It’s very clearly a cheap knockoff of an iPhone.

  • JonGarrett

yep, such a cheap knockoff that apple has to use 30% of its iDevice components from its competitors Samsung & LG.

such a cheap knockoff that despite apple’s huge success, Android still outsells iOS worldwide and in the US by far !!!!

such a cheap knockoff that despite apple’s huge success, they sell far less phones than Nokia & Samsung,

here’s a little quote from Reuters 12.12.2011  “While American bloggers and journalists obsess about iPhone, across the globe Samsung makes huge strides that eclipse Apple”

you just called that poor man a dumbass then you go on to say that the Samsung phone looks “exactly” like the iPhone 3G.

    1. Its larger
    2. it has a camera flash
    3. it has a speaker on the back
    4. camera is in center
    5. says Samsung on back
    6. No buttons on top
    7. HAS button on the right side
    8. light sensor on the front face
    9. longer speaker grill
    10. square home button

also has a less pronounced curve

  • Guest

“yep, such a cheap knockoff that apple has to use 30% of its iDevice components from its competitors Samsung & LG.”

Components have nothing to do with design. Samsung and LG are great parts suppliers. They also can make unique products, but overwhelmingly Samsung has opted simply to copy Apple’s designs. That is unfortunate because it means consumers aren’t getting the genuine choice that they deserve.

“such a cheap knockoff that despite apple’s huge success, they sell far less phones than Nokia & Samsung,”

This isn’t a very logical argument. Samsung absolutely sells more phones, but it also has dozens of models. I would be surprised if Apple sold more devices than Samsung. That would be truly astounding.

“While American bloggers and journalists obsess about iPhone, across the globe Samsung makes huge strides that eclipse Apple”

Ok? I don’t have a horse in this race. Samsung might well be selling more devices than Apple (in fact, I know they are), but when Samsung doesn’t design unique products it robs consumers like you and I from genuine choice. I would much rather see Samsung actually innovating (Samsung is very inventive but hardly innovative).

  • Michael Brinkworth

I love android too, and I love my galaxy s, but I have never been fooled that is is an apple, the photos above are photo-shopped for articles like this to enrage the apple fans.  Samsung provides some of the best components in the world as evidenced by apples continuing support, and apple don’t come up with their ‘designs’ independently, they copy them from the real world.

  • Michael Brinkworth

your loss. samsung and sony both manufacture the best tvs in the world, and are years ahead of apple in the smart tv game, oh sorry, apple dont have one do they.

on the bright side apple do charge premium rates for their superior phones and tablets so you do get bits of a samsung anyway.

and it doesnt cost apple huge dollars to design each product, they only have one phone they do little updates to (playing catchup), just huge marketing dollars to convince a certain type of person they need to send all their money to apple. :)

i’m not against the iphone or ipad, or the fact they have ripped off other designs from other companies, i’m against their monopolistic and anti-competitive philosophy.

  • itsJoshMills

I’m honestly sick of reading the crap you people argue about. Do you seriously have nothing better to do than bitch about similarities in phones? Here’s an idea, use that time to volunteer in your community or anything to better yourself. Just quit arguing about pointless crap.

  • Brandon Bran-Flakes DaPrato

I’m going to second itsJoshMills’ comment.

That’s why it’s called “Cult of Mac”, people…this is what they do for a living. Worship a company that makes tech products, and worship a man who was notorious for being an ignorant ass to everyone he met (read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson), among other things.

I have an iPhone and a Mac mini, and have used other Apple products in the past, but I don’t immediately scream “OHMAHGAWDSAMSUNGWAIDOYOUDOTHIS?!?!”. It’s a freakin’ phone. I don’t debate that the person’s phone next to me looks like mine. Why would I give a shit? I needn’t go into the details that the above image was Photoshopped to look more similar to the iPhone 3G than it actually is…but honestly, I digress. Eat your heart out.

  • Domdym

It uses a cheap rip off of gorilla glass, google galaxy nexus vs iphone 4s drop test, iphone 4s is destroyed in 3 drops, my old droid x is still not even scratched having dropped it 30 times alot of them on purpose to show people how go gorilla glass is really supposed to be.
If you use gorilla glass and make it paper thin it is still going to shatter when it drops.

  • Robergonza

There has always been ripping off of every new gadget when it comes to the market. But what do you expect from a country that shamelessly claims that the Samurai, Kendo and Ninja and the Japanese sword are “the most Korean of all the Japanese martial arts”.? Wherever there is money involved, larceny is bound to take over, and the Koreans appear to be the best at it.

  • Drew Heo

Allow me to say that I do own an Android phone, but I respect Apple for making fantastic technology. I would respect the a lot more if they reduced their ridiculous pricing on said technology, but the respect that I have for them is prominent. I thought that I would find something agreeable with a group that also enjoys Apple products, but I was sadly mistaken.

Let me get this straight… you are trying to tell me that an iPhone is so astoundingly unique that everything that exists afterwards must be “blatant” and “shameless” ripoff?

It’s a phone. It’s not unique. It’s quite simply the most plain and unoriginal thing that has existed for longer than a decade. Just because they have relatively similar thicknesses, have touchscreens, and a have a home button doesn’t make it a ripoff. All smartphones nowadays have a familiar shape to them…

I think you need to learn the concept of “ridiculous”. Because, this post is in fact, ridiculous. OMIGAWD, ANOTHER COMPANY’S PRODUCT BEARS SOME SIMILARITY TO AN iPHONE! Let’s make an entire blog update about trivial things that will surely create some flame wars in the comment section when we could instead post about something productive, and notable about an Apple product.

Tell me, cultists of all things Apple, what does it matter if a phone has a familiar shape with all other phones? How will this ruin your daily lives? Will you wake up in a cold sweat, knowing that someone living across the street from you doesn’t own an iPhone, and possibly has different opinions from yours? How does this directly affect you?

Actually, let’s make this a learning experience. Consider the following.

Why would you be so inclined as to care about the issue outlined in this post?

    Possible answers:

    1) You are angry because you are a brand person. You support the brands you like and those brands only.

    2) You heard about this somewhere and it angers you for reasons unbeknownst to even yourself that another company would make a product that bears a resemblance to one you prefer.

    3) You found that Apple is suing Samsung for theft of designs of technology.

If you answered #1 or #2, you are an idiot for caring. It doesn’t affect your life, and you probably could never find a way that it would affect your life.

If you answered #3, you have a somewhat valid reason to care. Legal action usually has a sort of moral problem within it (in this case, theft) and for that, you believe you should take a stance on this issue. Also, with lawsuits comes a delay of the next wave of technology that you so desperately crave.

Allow me to enlighten you that all three of the answers are somewhat true, but do not take account the gravity of the entire situation and therefore… All of the answers are wrong.

Let me be bluntly honest. The reason as to why this is even an issue is simply because Apple wants money. Apple attempted to file lawsuits against Chinese knockoffs, but due to copyright and patent laws in China, the lawsuits were nullified. Apple, feeling cheated of their opportunity to gain money in order to continue making products, actually looked for alternative opportunities to gain money. They didn’t look very far, because the internet probably did most of the searching for them. Someone on the internet has made an offhanded, possibly joking comment about how the iPhone and Galaxy S phones look similar. Since they wanted to file a suit against Chinese knockoffs, they thought… gee, the internet has a good point. The designs do look somewhat similar when you put them next to each other. They filed a lawsuit with Samsung over designs of the iPhone and their Galaxy S line. Apple decided to take a chance with a lawsuit, because the risk of losing the lawsuit is small for a company that has deep pockets, and if they win, they get even deeper pockets. You should note that the designs are somewhat different, and that, along with several meetings of people that list complaints to each other, will decide whether or not Apple gets money compensation on an issue that could swing either way.

However, the only reason you could possibly know about this is because this has gone public. And due to it being public, and due to the fact that you can never trust the internet as a reliable source, you have formed an opinion through a series of incomplete opinionated repostings of the above story I have summarized for you.

And once again, this doesn’t really affect you at all. Apple’s lawsuits usually never conflict with the release of their latest and greatest, and there’s almost no way something like this could turn into a bankruptcy, so you have nothing to worry about. In which case, you’re wasting your frickin’ time. Good for you, if you read through this wall of text, you’ve learned something today! Opinions are stupid and are a waste of your frickin’ time. You can stop reading this comment now because it’s a waste of your frickin’ time!

On a less witty note, some of you need to stop giving Samsung so much flak. They make technology and so does Apple. The competition between the two companies, and the lesser-known cooperation between the two companies, are the reasons why consumer technology has been advancing so quickly. They’re meeting the demands of our “we want more and better”, so stop your complaining.
