Powerful Mac Studio drives epic ultra-wide display [Setups]

I’m currently enjoying a pair of 27-inch 5K resolution touchscreen monitors, but many people prefer to go with one ultra-wide display — especially a big, curved one. Today’s featured setup uses a Mac Studio to drive a 49-inch, curved Samsung gaming monitor. The user loves it, but said it took some getting used to. They graduated to it from two 27-inch 4K displays, actually, very similar to what I used until recently.

For Mac Studio display, user goes ultra wide

2025 Mac Studio

Apple calls the 2025 Mac Studio “the most powerful Mac ever made.” It runs on either an M4 Max or a new M3 Ultra chip. It delivers professional-grade performance, extensive connectivity with Thunderbolt 5, and new capabilities in a compact and quiet design.

Pros:
  • High-end performance
  • Loads of ports, including Thunderbolt 5
  • Compact chassis
Cons:
  • Way more power than average users need

In a post titled “Mac Studio x Ultrawide Setup,” Redditor flaacko-el-chepe showcased the M4 Max Mac Studio (36GB unified memory, 512GB SSD), front and center in the photographs above and below. It drives an enormously wide 49-inch Samsung G9 curved display sporting 5120 x 2440p resolution (aka DQHD). It’s the standard larger ultra-wide that crops up often in setups online, unless someone happens to rock an even bigger smart TV as a monitor. But a 57-inch version of the Samsung monitor did show up recently on these pages, and perhaps we’ll start to see examples around that sound or bigger more often.

“Not finished yet but we are getting there,” Chepe noted at the top of their post. When I asked what they planned to do, they replied, “I need to add some desk speakers, mic on a mic arm and a [PlayStation] 5.”

One appreciative commenter suggested adding an Apple keyboard for Touch ID.

“The fingerprint feature would be nice, but I like mechanical keyboards,” Chepe replied. His keeb, which he uses with a wooden wrist rest, is a Keychron C3 Pro gaming keyboard with 87 programmable keys. “I highly recommend it,” they said. “It is not pricey and works very well.” Not pricey indeed: You can pick one up for under $40.

Other folks asked how Chepe likes that big screen. When another user chimed in they couldn’t live with “1440px vertical space” and would wait for a DUHD screen (higher resolution), Chepe concurred.

“I agree, sometimes it’s not enough space to work with,” he said.

When asked if ever used two screens and how does he compare to the one ultra-wide display, he said he did and liked it. But he likes his ultra-wide more.

“Yes, I have used two 27 inch Dell before,” he replied. “The ultra-wide makes my workflow easier to deal with. It is like having two 27-inch screens that can be split into three. I love it!”

He added that the big screen in comfortable to look at, but it takes getting used to, and text appears on the small side.

Ultra-wide display features:

  •  1000R curved display offers panoramic gaming experience. The ultra-wide 32:9 screen, equivalent to two side-by-side 16:9 monitors, delivers a full view.
  • DisplayHDR 600 delivers good contrast, with deep blacks and bright whites, so details shine even in dark scenes.
  • 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time reduce lag for smooth gaming action. Variable refresh rate (VRR) and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro reduce choppiness, screen lag and image tears.
  • Split screen that lets you team up with friends in a whole new way.
  • Picture-in-Picture allows you to pull up chats, videos and gaming tips on your main display, without the need for a second monitor.
  • Auto Source Switch+ provides auto connection. Monitor detects when connected devices are turned on and instantly switches to the new source signal.
