Apple just snapped up Nat Brown, who most recently was part of Valve’s Virtual Reality team. Before that, he was one of the gang-of-five that convinced Microsoft to create a little device called Xbox.
Whether he’s joining the team running Apple Arcade or will be part of the company’s Augmented Reality efforts is anyone guess.
An alternative take on the iPhone XI. Photo: Bassam Nasser
The grand unveiling of the iPhone 11 is less than two months away and even though we pretty much already know the new design, that’s not stopping some concept designers of dreaming what could be.
Notchless front displays have already made their way onto Android phones. This year’s iPhone is still expected to have a notch, so Bassam Nasser imagined what it would look like if Apple was ahead of the competition. His gorgeous concept also packs a horizontal three-lens camera and an embossed Apple logo that makes the iPhone look more futuristic than ever.
It’s high time you installed iOS 12.4 on your iPhone or iPad. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Details of five security bugs fixed by last-week’s iOS 12.4 update have been published. This means hackers now have what they need to use them on any device that hasn’t been updated.
Now would be a good time for anyone who’d been procrastinating to install this update on their iPhone or iPad.

Up until the latest developer beta 5, the iOS 13 share sheet has been a mess. At the top is the truly excellent quick-share row, which automatically suggests sharing destinations that you use often — iMessage and email contacts, AirDrop destinations, and so on. Then there was the familiar row of app icons.
However, below that came a single long list of B&W labels, mixing up all the other sharing options, along with all of your shortcuts. It was impossible to use. It also felt like a placeholder for a new UI design.
Now, that new design has been added, and it’s … OK. There’s still no color differentiation for your shortcuts, and the list is still too long, but you can customize some sections. Let’s take a look at the new iOS 13 share sheet options.

Facebook’s trick of never letting readers get to the bottom of its homepage would be banned under a law just proposed in the U.S. Senate. The same legislation also would block auto-playing media.
The goal is to make social networking less entrancing.

The big news in iOS 13 developer beta 5 is that the share sheet has finally been fixed up. Previously, it has been almost impossible to use in the iOS 13 beta, thanks to pretty much every share option being lumped into one never-ending list.
We have a post all about the new share sheet in iOS 13. Check it out to see what’s new on that front. For everything else, keep reading here.

Google Chrome’s brilliant dark mode, which makes your favorite websites easier to read at night, is coming to macOS.
The feature is currently available only on Android, but the flag that enables it will soon be supported cross-platform. You’ll be able to enjoy it on your Mac, Windows PC, and on Chrome OS devices.

The Developer’s Gear Case from WaterField Designs looks like a bespoke Bible case your pastor had custom made after he sent around an extra collection plate at Sunday service.
But have faith, for the inside of the case will deliver you from the hell of tangled cords. And it will end the searches for the smaller tech accessories that are constantly lost in your backpack or shoulder bag.
Apple pulled back the curtain in its latest ads. Photo: Apple

The new one minute spots offer an intimate look at what goes on backstage before Florence and the Machine, FKA Twigs and Kamasi Washington make their appearances at concerts in Colorado, New York and London. Each of the three ads were shot by a different director giving them a unique feel.

Today’s Apple earnings could well be the company’s most boring quarterly report this year. But if you’re looking for a no-risk time to throw some short-term cash at Apple stock, now could be the right moment.

iPhone shipments in China tumbled 14% in the last quarter, according to new figures published by Canalys.
In doing so, it left the market open for Huawei to continue its rise. Huawei, which overtook Apple in total smartphone sales last year, increased its shipments by 31% during the same period.

The more devices we travel with, the greater the chances of running out of power at just the wrong moment. That’s why it’s important to travel with backup battery, so why not get one that charge more than one device?

The new Today at Apple sessions, called [AR]T, will take place around the world. They will include an interactive walk featuring works by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists.

Tool, the American rock band which was a staple of alternative music in the 1990s and early 2000s, is finally bringing its back catalog to streaming services.
The exact services the album will be available on haven’t been named. However, it seems incredibly likely that Apple Music — one of the most popular streaming services — will be among them.
New images posted to Apple’s website reveal the opening of two new stores in Japan for later this year. The stylized logos are accompanied by text reading “planned for 2019.”
One of the logos uses the colors of Apple’s iconic rainbow logo. The other is a slightly retro-style logo showing the Apple logo as a series of lines with a sun-hued gradient.

Experts warn of the dangers of mucking about with visibly damaged lithium-ion batteries, but some people just can’t resist. A guy taking an iPhone apart because the battery was swelling was caught on film as it blows up in his hands.
Roxsyn -- a synth that rocks. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Roxsyn is the “world’s first metamorphic guitar synthesizer” for iPad. The app lets you plug in your guitar and, when you play it, synthesizer sounds come out. It also offers a full suite of knobs to tweak and shape the resulting sounds, just like a regular, keyboard-driven synth.
But — and this is important — it’s not just using your guitar as a MIDI controller for a normal synthesizer. Let’s take a look.
Don’t settle for tacky plastic when buying an Apple Watch stand. Choose the HEDock and enjoy cool aluminum instead. It’s super-sturdy, looks terrific, and sports a bargain price tag.

The iPhone’s augmented reality capabilities are about to ramp up to an all-new level, thanks to camera sensors that can tell how far away objects are.
TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told investors in a new research note that Apple is readying cameras with time-of-flight sensors. Adding the new ToF sensors should give the iPhone better computer vision. They could help take better pics, too.

Even if you keep your iPhone in a nice case and regularly polish the screen, it is probably a filthy cesspit of germs, fluff and abrasive dust. Fortunately, if you can be bothered to actually do something about it, cleaning your iPhone is easy and rewarding.
Rewarding in the sense that you’ll be rewarded with a pristine slab of glass and steel, instead of having to finger a filth-bomb every time you take your pocket computer out to use it.
