Remember the Area Ware wooden iPhone dock concept that we saw back in May? No, neither do I, a problem not helped by the fact that Google insists on searching for “are aware” when I tap in “Area Ware”. Either way, that neat design has been, uh, redesigned and can now be almost bought: it’ll be shipping on November 1st.
The shape of the “radio” has changed little since our own John Brownlee had his customary woodgasm back in the spring, but the look is all new. Or should I say all old? The wooden speaker now has the horizontal speaker slats and curved top-mounted handle common to pretty much every radio before the 1980s, and has a spot carved out for your iPhone 5. There’s even a free companion app which sports a retro tuner-dial interface and “finds up to seven public radio stations within a 50-mile radius.”
The Radio Dock is completely passive, amplifying the iPhone’s speaker by letting its sound rattle around inside the hollow beech box. And this is great news: if you can’t wait until November to get one of these docks, then just grab the photos off the site, grab a neighborhood school-kid and pay him to build you one in shop class. What could possible go wrong?
