Retro tech is back, and it doesn’t get much more nostalgic than transforming a new M4 Mac mini into a Macintosh straight out of the 1980s. Better yet, the process is simple: Just pop the Mac mini into the Wokyis M5 dock and you’re done.
Don’t mistake this for simple cosmetic trickery. The add-on includes a functional 5-inch screen. Plus, it’s a hub that adds a variety of ports to the Mac as well as a slot for an internal SSD.
Accessory remakes M4 Mac mini into a compact classic Macintosh
A wave of retro-tech enthusiasm has swept through gadget lovers, blending nostalgia with modern performance. From mechanical keyboards with clicky switches to rebuilt game consoles and reimagined film cameras, manufacturers and users alike are embracing the familiar look and feel of classic hardware while enjoying the capabilities of today’s technology.
The Wokyis M5 is a prime example. The accessory for Apple’s M4 Mac mini houses the powerful modern computer inside a shell inspired by the original 1980s Macintosh, giving users a playful way to indulge in vintage design without sacrificing performance and features.
To be clear, the Wokyis M5 is smaller than Apple’s desktop from the 1980s, and you’re not really going to use its built-in 5-inch screen as your primary one. True, the 1280-by-720 IPS LCD can monitor email or social media, but you’ll want to get real work done on a large external monitor.
But that’s still being true to the original computer. As someone who used a Macintosh SE back in the day, I connected a big screen to it as soon as I could afford one.
A very modern hub
The Wokyis M5 offers far more than the nostalgic feeling of having a classic Macintosh on your desk. It comes loaded with 21st-century features.
The hub offers a DisplayPort 2.1 port that supports resolutions up to 8K@60Hz. It also includes four USB-A ports supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2 for speeds of up to 10Gbps, each capable of supplying power at up to 5V/0.9A for connected accessories.
In addition, it features a USB-C port with the same USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps performance and 5V/0.9A power delivery. It connects to the Mac mini through a dedicated USB-C host port.
For audio, the hub provides a 3.5 mm headphone jack. And it also packs SD and microSD card reader slots.
You can hide the Mac mini’s own built-in ports — both front and back — with the Macintosh Classic shell. Or you can keep them available. It’s totally up to you.
If acting as a hub isn’t enough, the Wokyis M5 boasts an M.2 SSD enclosure for holding drives up to 8TB.
It’s important to note that there are two versions of the accessory. One connects at 10Gbps and the other uses Thunderbolt 5 for 80Gbps connections to the SSD.
