The BBC’s technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones wanted to find out which smartphone was the best listener, so he conducted a quick test of his own.
He spoke the same text into a Siri-equipped iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and compared the transcribed results.
The text he read was this:
It’s a challenge that has occupied scientists for decades and promised huge fortunes to anyone who could solve it. I’m talking about speech recognition, back in the news because it is one of the most significant features of Apple’s latest phone. Will it remain an amusing party-trick – or become the key way in which we communicate with computers?
Siri transcribed it as:
It’s a challenge that has occupied scientists the decade and promised huge fortunes to anyone who could solve it stop I’m talking about speech recognition back in the news because it is one of the most significant features of Apples latest phone STOCK will it remain unamusing party trick or become McKee way in which we communicate with COMPUTERS?
And the Galaxy Tab came back with:
If I started the decade and poets 14th avenue and hope It stops on Interstate recognItIon back In the news because It’s 1 of the most signIant pIctures of apples latest phone got the wIll remaIn In the musIc of the trIck or become a keyway computers.
Rory tactfully concludes that Siri has “leap-frogged” its rival.

That was one stupid test, motherfucker.
Do you say this cause you have a Android device? I understand your jealousy and it’s really okay!!
Haha, spot the android owner!
Get out of here Android owner, this is Cult of Mac, not cult of android. We don’t like your kind. lol J/k.
And you replied it. Rapist.
Why don’t we all give him a few bucks so he can buy an iPhone and finally be a happy person.

We’ll remain and I’m using party trick, or become the key way in which we communicate with computers?
Here are my results after reading the above paragraphs.
You see, siri would translate that comment as “that was one stupid test, mother……, whereas the Galaxy tab would translate as “I am a stupid twat, who enjoys his mother.

I tried the same test on my iPhone & it got it 100% correct. Not bad on a Scottish accent ;-)
Bamm ,slammm…..go gog go Siri!
Evo 4G results:
“It’s a challenge that has occupied scientist for decades and promised
you’d fortunes to anyone who could solve it. I’m talking about speech
recognition, back in the news because it is 1 of the most significant

Seems the deviation between the Iphone and the Evo favor the Android a bit, as there are fewer mistakes in my test (repeated three times with the same results each time, indicating speech patterns are more problematic than the actual program).
Too bad he didn’t know the command for a period in Siri is to say, “period”. Perhaps that’s too intuitive.
In the UK it’s FULLSTOP. Not period.
I believe Period means menstrual cycle in the UK.
… and both commands work with Siri in both countries.
will Siri come to the ipad3?
It’s this type of attitude that makes me not what to use an iPhone despite owning a 2011 Macbook Pro and iPod Touch 4g.
I’ll stick with my more expense and better Nexus S.
So if all you own is Apple products then you aren’t allowed to criticize them and as soon as you do then you are a someone who uses the competitors products???
Obviously Siri is better because they really aren’t the same. Google didn’t make their voices control to be like Siri. Also they bought a company who was making something similar like over a year ago so I’m sure it will be added to Android but all the iPhones fanboys will claim that Google started working on it as soon as iOS 5 was released. Hell some Android devs were playing around and even made an app similar to Siri in 8 hours about 2 days ago.
I like iOS 5 but I hate that it doesn’t keep a counter on top to tell you that you may have some notifications that you have looked at like on Android.
Stop being trying to be all superior when you are just a fanboy like they are.
You can also spot a fanboy!
Ha. I just read the entire thing to my Droid, and it got every word absolutely correct, with one exception: it wrote apples instead of Apple’s. It also got the punctuation correct, with one exception: it wrote out the word “dash” instead of putting in a — after “party trick” (which by the way isn’t supposed to be hyphenated.
Galaxy Tab did not copy SIRI because SAMSUNG (SAME SOON) is afraid they will be banned also in UK.
I believe you’re spot on.
Why would someone’s attitude make you not want to use an iPhone??
Bloody hell
Because I have seen it over and over again and this how other people see iPhone owners and it’s partly true.
You actually have evidence about this? Anyway, why would you buy a product based upon what you think other people will think? Who cares what they think? Be your own person.
Believe me I say that is not the only reason that I don’t use an iPhone but I consider it one of the top phones available.
we’re all fanboys, retard.
Not all of here are. Cultofmac is my favorite Apple news website but I use iOS, Mac, Windows 7 & 8, and Android.
Bloody indeed.
