“So, what do you cosplay as?” asks this geek girl in the comic book shop. “Slutty Hawkeye? Slutty Thor? Slutty Iron Man?”
The video below is one of those “funny because it’s true” situations, as many women who love superheroes and comics hear the same kinds of questions and face the same sort of dismissive candor from geeky men who can’t seem to realize that everyone loves comics and superhero movies.
Check it out and see how annoying it would be to face this kind of discrimination.
It’s weird, but even though films like The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy are making boatloads of cash because everyone of all genders are enjoying them in theaters, there’s still a prevailing sense of fearful entitlement among many comic book fans as they watch their beloved hobby gain mass appeal.
Here’s hoping we see more women feeling comfortable with letting their inner geek-flag fly. There’s no reason to bully women (or, like in the video, men) over their geeky passions; there’s plenty of nerdery to go around.
