Southwest Airlines was forced to evacuate a flight from Louisville to Baltimore this morning before it hit the runway, thanks to a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone that caught fire.

Explosive Note 7 units have been reported around the globe thanks to faulty lithium-ion batteries. In this instance though, the Galaxy Note 7 in question was a replacement unit that the owner received after Samsung issued its global recall.

[contextly_auto_sidebar]”All passengers and crew exited the plane via the main cabin door and no injuries were reported,” a Southwest Airlines spokesperson told The Verge.

The owner of the Galaxy Note 7 said he got the new phone on September 21st at an AT&T store. Before the flight left the gate, the owner says he powered it down and put it in his pocket when it started smoking.

Thick grey-green smoke poured out of the device after the owner dropped it on the floor. In a matter of moments it had burned through the plane’s carpet. Luckily it occurred at the gate instead of mid-flight.

The battery was at 80% when it was powered off and Samsung’s wireless charger was the only device used to charge it. Louisville Fire Department’s arson unit seized the device for investigation, while the owner already switched to an iPhone 7.

Whoops. This has already hurt Samsung. Now, their “safe” phones are catching fire. Not good. Not good at all. Apple and Tim Cook will be laughing right now.

So glad I will be reporting to Dobbins, ARB via car instead of taking a plane. Who knows how many of these Samsung IED’s are out there and brought onto planes.

  3. TJ says:

So I assume they’ll have to ban the Note from all flights. This is crazy.

What would be •crazy• is to be sitting on a plane with a Note 7. The “shoe bomber” had a far less potent device at his feet, and thus we’ve all been taking off our shoes for many years now, just for the privilege of paying a lot of money to fly. Don’t think I’d want to be on a plane with a potential time-bomb, whether intended for that purpose or not. Just one man’s opinion, of course.

  4. Ohhhhhh SWINESUNG Karma Karma Karma. All that corruption and stealing is finally catching up to you! LOL!!

I think all this fake just a propaganda. 4 Days ago..MAN LEFT TOOTHLESS AFTER EXPLOSION OF HIS SAMSUNG ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH (News). Now, “Galaxy Note 7 replacement phone reportedly catches fire on the plane”…It’s an American FASCISTS drama. Another Samsung Haters propaganda. “Oh no don’t buy Samsung products “. The Apple fanboys and Americans are dangerous fascists (Some). In fact, This is an American FASCIST Business drama. What a shame!

The fascist US Media campaign against Samsung. There are plenty of reports recently about iPhone 6 and 7 explosions as well. But they are no news about that. American fascist media are very good at masking Apple problems. The American media (fascist U.S. media) are shameless American resellers. They’re jealous of Samsung because Samsung is only the brand, that can fuck apple. iPhones(6) are exploding but it’s sales are continuing. Because Apple is the biggest money sucking company in the world. Apple is just a wicked, selfish, and evil company. Samsung is an honest company (Galaxy Note 7 recall). New safe units just don’t explode. another fraud.

    Wait and see…truth https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/281b42e8ee27f7dc882b5587e6a4253bd04c93bcaddcad9b94576f86fa2e1218.png

Perfect timing for Google’s keynote of the pixel. All of these exploding reports may seem a little too well timed for competitors so I agree on the conspiracy theories… but hopefully the Pixel can pick up where Galaxy has fallen off.

And the films going to be called ‘Notes on a Plane’
