You know what a rebus is — a graphic puzzle representing a word or phrase. An example would be a letter “M” sitting atop the word “day”: “M” on “day” equals “Monday.”

REBUS, a new “absurd logic game” from Jutiful, is an app containing more than 100 rebuses (with more on the way). Solve these stylish word puzzles to collect achievements you can share with friends.

Some of the puzzles are really easy; others are maddeningly difficult. All are served up as vibrant graphics designed to tease your brain and spur your imagination.

The intuitive interface makes REBUS seem simple at first, but the unpredictable nature of the game’s puzzles yield a delightfully complex experience.

The REBUS puzzle on the left was simple enough. The one on the right? Still guessing. Screengrabs: Cult of Mac

Take the examples above. I soon got “M” on “Key,” yielding the correct answer, “Monkey.”

But how about the one on the right? After 15 minutes, I guessed “Fringe.” Why? The five rings make up the first five colors of the spectrum, minus indigo and violet. Subtract the first letters of “Indigo” and “Violet,” and “Five ring” minus “IV” leaves you with the letters F E R I N G, which can be rearranged to spell “Fringe.”

No cigar. I still don’t know the answer to this rebus. And I have nearly a hundred more to go.

Play REBUS and you’ll discover a game of associations, logic and design that energizes your brain.

REBUS is available as a free download for iPhone and iPad on the App Store with in-app purchases. (It’s also available for Android in the Google Play store.)

I’m reading this puzzled as well. Looks like a complete advertisement. I wonder if Cultofmac give the dev free space or he paid for it.

As a reader you expect the reviews and articles to be unbiased and impartial. If this article was indeed written by the app developers themselves I’ll unsubscribe from Cult of Mac.

Still no word on who it came from…

I tried the app out of interest and it was pretty bad with no true navigation system and an array of adverts placed where you would naturally click.

Very disappointing. Not only the app has very intrusive ads, but they also lead to scam pages.
