Boring Pluribus merch doesn’t do brainy Apple TV show justice

Not every Apple TV show gets merchandise like T-shirts and hats, but Vince Gilligan’s oddly original sci-fi head-scratcher Pluribus — the most-watched Apple TV show ever — just did. Too bad the merch is on the lame side.

One of the most weirdly refreshing sci-fi dramas in recent history deserves better than what Sony Pictures is peddling.

New Pluribus TV show apparel doesn’t do the series justice

The new Sony Pictures apparel tied to the hit show Pluribus , which just won a Golden Globe for its star Rhea Seehorn, joins merch drops from just a few other Apple TV shows. That includes a range of gear from various companies for hit series Severance (including “innie” and “outie” soundtracks on vinyl and a Lumon Industries keyboard) and Ted Lasso (soccer jerseys, Barbie dolls, shortbread cookies). Some of that stuff sparked a lot more interest than the new Pluribus collection.

With the Pluribus garb, I doubt even the most sweetly guileless souls among the “others” in humanity’s new hive mind on the show would want to wear any of it. Though they famously can’t hurt a fly, they might quietly discard this clothing. And cantankerous main character Carol Sturka (played by Seehorn), an unhappy romantasy novelist who is not yet among the “joined?” Forget about it. She’d have to bite down on her tongue to keep from going on a rant about ugly T-shirts that could kill thousands. (And if you don’t get the reference to Carol needing to curb her anger, watch the show!)

These T-shirts show a little imagination, at least. The petri dish, left, the grenade and the Wycaro romance novel series all figure into the show’s plot.

The new Sony Pictures Pluribus collection of show-themed merchandise consists of eight products, including T-shirts, a hat and a hoodie. Most of the apparel comes in sizes from small to 2X large. The Wycaro and grenade T-shirts appear to come in regular and fitted sizes.

Prices range from $25 to $50, with the boring hoodie on the high end. Even the ball cap just showing the name of the show costs $30, which seems a little steep. And while $25 T-shirts are no shock — and the Wycaro romance novel series one and the grenade one are faintly amusing, while the petri dish one might not register as such — they’re just not that interesting.

Where’s the grenade plush toy that rants like Carol when you squeeze it, for example?
