Apple wraps up first Entrepreneur Camp after helping 42 companies

The first year of Apple Entreprenuer Camp today wraps up after its fourth cohort of 2019. It has helped more than 42 companies, all led by women, since it kicked off last November.

Apple is now inviting others to sign up for next year’s cohort, which runs from January 28 to February 5. You have until November 15 to submit your application.

According to eMarketer, 30.3 million users are currently using Apple Pay. Meanwhile, Starbucks’ mobile payment system has around 25.2 million customers.

An ex-Oregon engineering student from China who plead guilty to a scam involving counterfeit iPhones has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.

30-year-old Quan Jiang and another student imported fake iPhones. They swapped these out for legit devices under Apple’s warranty scheme. The working iPhones were then sent to China, and they were rewarded with a cut of the profits. The scam reportedly cost Apple up to $1.2 million.

Apple is paying up faster to help struggling display-maker

Apple has reportedly agreed shorter payment terms with struggling display-maker Japan Display (JDI). It is part of a plan to help stabilize the company following years of financial troubles.

The deal comes after Apple agreed to cough up as much as $200 million as part of bailout to keep JDI afloat.

The company that makes face filters for Instagram will soon remove all filters that offer AR plastic surgery.

The new policy will be welcomed by body-positive activists and mental health professionals who believe social media is feeding a rise in body dysmorphia. They point to anecdotes from cosmetic surgeons who get requests from patients to match the look created by so-called beauty filters.

Apple reportedly is working on a number of big design changes for the 2020 iPhone lineup. It wants to shrink the notch (finally!) and add wider antenna bands that will support 5G connectivity.

The company is said to be testing a number of prototype designs — all of which feature smaller notches. Apple also is planning for a future without Lightning connectivity.

Interest in the iPhone has picked up considerably in the second half of 2019, a new report claims. It cites OLED display orders made by Apple to its OLED supplier Samsung Display.

Samsung will reportedly deliver 40-50 million OLED display panels to Apple for the second half of 2019. In particular, the supply volume in September is 40% higher than the initially planned order. That suggests that the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max have been big hits.
