Apple will reportedly give the iMac an M6 upgrade later this year. As part of this, it also plans to launch the all-in-one desktop in new color options.
Unfortunately, besides a faster chip and new colours, Apple supposedly won’t make any other changes to the iMac.
The M6 iMac will stick to a familiar formula
Apple revived the iMac with the M1 refresh in May 2021, with a sleeker design and a fresh color palette. Then, in October 2024, it again updated the lineup with the faster M4 chip and in new shades. The company plans to follow the same formula with the iMac’s M6 refresh.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that the M6-equipped iMac will launch before the end of the year. “All signs point to the M6 models being close to launch, and you should be able to buy one before the end of the year,” he writes.
Apart from the faster M6 chip, the upcoming iMac refresh will stand out for its new color options. Apple is unlikely to make any radical changes to the color palette, instead offering different shades of the same colors.
That’s the extent of the changes Apple plans to make, though. If you were hoping for a bigger screen, an OLED display, or a higher refresh rate, you’ll be disappointed.
Gurman previously revealed that Apple will refresh the base MacBook Pro with its next-generation M6 chip. It will arrive alongside the long-overdue M5 Max/Ultra Mac Studio and OLED MacBook Pro refresh, which will feature the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
Apple’s M6 chip should be based on TSMC’s 2nm node and bring notable performance and efficiency improvements. Despite that, Apple will not launch an M6 Pro and M6 Max variant of the chip. Instead, it will directly skip to the M7 family later in 2027.
