Mophie fixes flaws in wireless charging with new StealthCharge system

Mophie makes loads of wireless chargers, so it’s as aware as anyone of the flaws in the technology. That’s why it developed StealthCharge, its improvement to Qi2.2 that lets wireless chargers run more quickly because they stay cooler.

The tech is built into two new desktop chargers plus a travel one. Apple likes these enough that all three are available from the Apple Store, as well as directly from Mophie.

Wireless iPhone chargers with Qi2.2 go up to 25W or even higher, but they don’t do so for very long. Real-world performance is frequently lower because wireless charging generates heat. As temperatures rise, charging systems automatically reduce power to protect both the charger and the device. This process, known as thermal throttling, can significantly slow charging speeds compared to the charger’s advertised maximum wattage.

Mophie’s answer? StealthCharge.

“By relocating critical Qi2.2 charging components from the charging surface into the base of the products, Mophie has fundamentally reengineered the underlying charging architecture,” the accessory maker says of its new system. “A dedicated heat sink surrounding the charging coil transfers heat away from the charging pad, while the metal frame of the base further dissipates heat, enabling a cooler charging experience by design.”

There’s no fan, a conscious decision to avoid the inevitable noise. Even a light hum can be audible to someone trying to sleep next to a wireless charger on their bedside nightstand.

StealthCharge now in three new Mophie products

StealthCharge debuts in the Mophie 4-in-1 Wireless Charge Stand, the 3-in-1 Wireless Charge Stand as well as the Roam 3-in-1 Travel Charger, all designed specifically for Apple users.

The first two are designed to offer elevated, clutter-free charging to the user’s home or office. They can simultaneously charge an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. The 4-in-1 model adds an integrated, 60W retractable USB-C cable to juice up an iPad or MacBook.

In both of these chargers, the MagSafe mat that holds the iPhone delivers 25W of sustained, fast wireless charging thanks to StealthCharge technology. It also allows adjustable viewing angles for work, video calls or bedside use. Both of the chargers also include Apple Watch fast charging.

The Mophie Roam 3-in-1 Travel Charger brings most of these benefits to travelers in a compact, foldable design with an included travel case. You really only miss out on the ability to adjust the iPhone viewing angle.

It’s also ready to juice up an iPhone at 25W with the benefits of StealthCharge, and it also brings Apple Watch fast charging and an AirPods charger.

“By addressing the main challenges with wireless charging, including heat and throttled wireless charging speeds, we’re delivering an uncompromised and sustained full-speed charging experience in premium, minimalist designs,” said Brian Oleksa, chief marketing officer at Mophie.

Available from Apple, too

All three of these Mophie StealthCharge products launched Tuesday, June 16:

All are exclusively available at Apple stores globally, Apple.com and Mophie.com.
