Apple’s MobileMe service is currently experiencing issues that have resulted in an outage lasting several hours for 75% of subscribers. The issues mean those affected are unable to access Mail, Me.com web apps, or Find My iPhone.

MobileMe downtime and minor (but frustrating) issues nothing new to the service, and in fact seem fairly common, but today’s issues are significantly more widespread than usual, affecting the vast majority of the service’s subscribers for an extended period of time.

Apple has recognized the isses affecting Mail, Me.com web apps and Find My iPhone, and says that “Normal service will be restored ASAP.”

Many reports are speculating that the downtime could be related to iCloud — MobileMe’s successor that could be set to launch from Tuesday, October 4, at Apple’s iPhone media event.

iCloud is going to be a massive failure if they don’t fix the stability and reliability issues regarding mail and calendar.  How Apple cannot get this right is baffling.

Mobile me says it’s working now, but it’s not.  That’s over ten hours with no mail service.  Gee, fills me with confidence about the cloud…

This is why I switched to gmail, tumblr, and Amazon S3. This is more evidence that Apple can’t execute a cloud strateggy or seemingly understand it’s customer’s need in regard to the cloud.

Still no mail.  Tech support kicks you to MobileMe chat support.  Which I’ve been waiting on for nearly an hour.  Jesus.

  18. X says:

Had to wait almost an hour last night to chat with a MobileMe adviser who said the system was down for maintenance and had been for two hours.  Yet, the status page said that everything was working and that maintenance wouldn’t begin for another hour.  Doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.

MobileMe downtime is a regular daily occurrence and to think that iCloud arriving next week will solve all sync problems seems a bit unrealistic.  Since it will be a new service, I imagine there will be even more problems during the first 6 – 12 months.  If iCloud will be very reliable then why didn’t Apple put the same reliability into MobileMe for customers who have been paying $100 per year?
