Apple has decided to lower the amount of money it pays affiliate who funnel customers to buy apps and in-app purchases from the iOS App Store.

In an email update sent out today to members of its affiliates program, Apple says its cutting commission rates by more than half, leaving companies and websites with less money from what can be a valuable revenue stream.

The new commission rate will be dropped to just 2.5 percent on apps. Other iTunes content will still give affiliates a 7 percent commission.

“Starting on May 1st 2017, commissions for all app and in-app content will be reduced from 7% to 2.5% globally. All other content types (music, movies, books, and TV) will remain at the current 7% commission rate in all markets. We will also continue to pay affiliate commissions on Apple Music memberships so there are many ways to earn commissions with the program.”

Apple currently pays out a one time 50% commission for new Apple Music subscriptions that come within 30 days after visiting a website. To see a full break down on commission rates, check out Apple’s iTunes Affiliate Resources page.
