iPhone apps are live streaming the trial of a mother accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter.

Casey Anthony, 25, is standing trial in Orange County, Florida on a charge of first-degree murder. Her 2-year-old daughter Caylee’s disappearance in the summer of 2008 became a national obsession.

The $0.99 Casey Anthony app offers a live stream of the trial plus audio interviews and 911 calls and court documents.

This one of three apps about the Anthony case, another released mid-May from Hearst also offers a live stream of the trial.

If people have long sat in on public trials as a form of entertainment, these apps bring that kind of participation to new levels.

A basic and important part of Western democracy is the right of everyone to be tried by a jury of their peers in open court. Open means anyone can attend, the only requirement being to act according to the rules of the Court. People attend trials for any number of reasons, but everyone who does so is participating in the democratic process. If a few go for prurient reasons, so be it. Some attend just to be out of the rain! Again, so be it.

The process has long included the right of the press to record and publish the entire proceedings. This app simply extends the process.

My guess is few will avail themselves of a full exposure to a trial, after the novelty wears off. Much of what transpires is dull beyond measure.

How about an App that sends 500volts@50amps to her seat in the court room?
